CHISTLEHURST’S Lewis Burton has vowed to take the tennis world by storm after his Junior Wimbledon bid came to an end yesterday, writes Nick Clowes.
The 17-year-old, who was beaten in the singles first round by Venezuela’s 11th seed David Souto at the weekend, partnered fellow Brit George Morgan in the boys doubles.
Burton, a former Coopers Technology College pupil, was powerless to stop Guilherme Clezar and Karim-Mohamed Maamoun progressing to the second round courtesy of a 6-3, 6-4 victory.
But he has refused to get downhearted and vowed to bounce back to form when he returns to the ITF junior tour.
“I was in a bit of form coming here and I’d love to carry that on now,” said Burton, ranked at number 309 in the junior listings.
“I’m feeling good at the moment and I’ll sit down and plan what my next stage is now but my plan is just to rise up the rankings as soon as possible.
“I thought we played well in the doubles - we returned really well and the serve was working well for both of us so we are delighted with that.
“We were wildcards coming into the tournament so we can’t really complain too much about the draw – I think we were just hoping not to draw one of the seeds early on, but we are still happy with our performance.”
The teenager had been a man in form heading to the All England Club Grand Slam, reaching the second round of the AEGON Junior International in Roehampton.
And Burton added: “I can be pretty proud of my grass-court season. It is a surface I like and I’m pleased I got some doubles play under my belt as well.
“Doubles is a completely different game to singles and people who are good at one, are not necessarily good at the other so if I can develop that area, I’ll be pleased.”
