New ownership could revive Booker stadium plans

Wasps' brokers say new stadium still 'completely viable' Wasps' brokers say new stadium still 'completely viable'

THE company charged with selling Wasps believe a new stadium remains 'completely viable'.

Club owner Steve Hayes announced this morning that Wasps were for sale and Baker Tilly to search worldwide for a buyer.

Jim Clifford, Corporate Finance partner at Baker Tilly said: “London Wasps is a club which needs the highest quality facilities to ensure sustained success and a commercially viable business and there are plans here for a world-class stadium which remains completely viable for this club under new ownership.

"Many great brands with great potential for relevance to a wider community remain underexploited. Wasps need not be one of them.”

Meanwhile, Hayes said: “I remain disappointed that Wycombe District Council withdrew its support for the Sporting Village project earlier this year.

"Since that time I have been working with the London Wasps board to evaluate the best steps forward for the club.

"I fully believe that a new stadium for Wasps is essential in the coming years as we have always said that Adams Park was unsustainable as a long term option.

"I will work with any potential owners to develop the Sporting Village model we had already come up with at an alternative location.”

This news comes just hours after Wanderers attracted 931 fans to Adams Park for a cup tie.

However, if Wasps are under new ownership their ties to Wanderers could be severed and it could turn out that Wanderers remain at Adams Park while Wasps move away, either to a new stadium in Wycombe or to a new town.

UPDATED at 5.35pm: Wasps spokesman Alison Donnelly moved to clarify Baker Tilly’s statement.

She said the sports village proposals are still viable but any plan is "unlikely" to be for Booker.

Preferably to a new town, far away from Wycombe as possible.

So it all ends well.

Wycombe Wanderers football club has been a part of Wycombe town and integral to its history. It will be a step backwards for the town if it loses the football club as it is not capable of being sulf- sustaining on its own without the Rugby club. Steve Hayes has ploughed millions to keep it going for the benefit of the town and the fans. People will realize this when both clubs have disappeared from the town and the only reason people will come to Wycombe is to the see the caves.

I may be wrong, but from previously well documented comments, I was under the impression that WWFC, under Steve Hayes ownership, is now in far more debt than it was before he took over.

Quoted for truth.

Hayes has done nothing positive for WWFC.

so all the fans that they've gained in Wycombe might potentially have to travel somewhere else to see wasps play. it will be a shame that those who didn't want to see a new stadium and sports complex will have killed the town.
how many who were against it will now object when WDC are searching for a site for a new running track?

I will object if WDC want to destroy the great airfield facility at Booker.

There are plenty of other places more suited to a running track... But I'm not convinced we need another running track anyway, so I may also object to wastage of taxpayers money on that too.

It depends on where they want to put it and whether it will require building 600 houses on green belt land to finance it

Plus having a running track near by won't vastly increase traffic volumes and noise pollution.

I'm sure the 931 WWFC fans will be very upset!

There was never ever going to be a new sports complex at Booker, that was Steve Hayes' hype, unless you want to call a few rugby and football pitches a sports complex.
.
However WDC are now going to build a new sports complex at Handy Cross, and there is plenty of room for expansion at Adams Park (at the clubs' own expense), so it's a win/win for all the taxpayer's of Wycombe.

Some cheek these people have...
Their business model was exposed for the sham it was - privatisation of the profits, municipalisation of the losses and a shameless grab at green belt land. Throw in ruining the finances of two local professional sports clubs to destruction into the equation and you've got yourself one fine mess.
-
Go now and don't slam the door as part of your hissy fit!

Just to clarify, the "go now" comment was directed at the people trying to flog the dead horse of developing Booker, not London Wasps!
