THE first wave of Wasps players return to pre-season training next Tuesday as the club begin the long wind-up to the start of the Guinness Premiership on September 5.
About a dozen players will be back in the gym and on the training pitch, with more joining them in the coming weeks.
Director of rugby Tony Hanks said: “They are coming back in stages. We have a plan in place based on how much rugby they played last year and where they are in their conditioning.
“It’s very much done on an individual basis.
“A dozen players are back in training next Tuesday, and after that it is a staggered process.”
The early start is possible because of Wasps’ early finish last season, and Hanks says there is no danger of burn-out kicking in around February/March time.
He said: “Most of them have had about a month off and they will get more time off during pre-season.
“It’s not like they’ll go all the way until May now.
“But I think this just shows how keen everyone is here to hit the ground running this season.
“There’s been nothing official, but guys have been doing their own thing already. I’ve seen them in the gyms around here and one or two have come in to the club.”
Wasps expect to return to their training camp in Skala, Poland on July 3 and hope to firm up three pre-season matches in the next few days.
