Gafa urges Quins to bounce back
Prolific: Matt Gafa Deadlinepix Hakan Yazici HY2355
Prolific: Matt Gafa Deadlinepix Hakan Yazici HY2355

Harlequins RL try machine Matt Gafa has paid tribute to his team-mates after the Australian trickster maintained his scorching start to the season.

Gafa's touchdown was one of few bright spots in Quins' 58-12 destruction at the hands of St Helens on Friday night.

And Gafa, who moved into third in the Super League scoring charts with his eighth try of the season, was quick to divert the praise.

He said: "I don't set any targets but I am really enjoying playing in the centres at the moment.

"I keep the ball in hand and try to get one-on-one or two-on- two out wide.

"Playing with the likes of Rob Purdham and Danny Orr, you are always going to be given opportunities and, at the moment, I am taking them."

Gafa revealed that spirits were down after the defeat at Knowsley Road.

And he urged his team-mates to cast aside the disappointment and get back to the style that has served them so well this season.

He added: "We fell off a lot of tackles and we dropped a lot of ball.

"I thought St Helens were excellent but it was our worst performance of the season.

"When players start making handling errors, it can seem contagious the way it spreads through the team.

"We played well in patches but that seems to be our way - patches.

"If we can play like that for the whole game, I am sure results will come our way."

The London club have a quick chance to make amends when Castleford visit for a Challenge Cup fourth round clash on Saturday.

And Gafa is relishing the occasion.

He revealed: "It's one of the two trophies we can win in the year and we want to be winning trophies.

"We will definitely be looking to turn up the performance as the cup is one of our real priorities for the year."
