Mac: Weather will not freeze us out

Harlequins Rugby League head coach Brian McDermott believes his team will be fully prepared for the new Super League season despite freezing weather interrupting preseason training.

Harlequins kick off their season earlier than most clubs with a visit from Wakefield Wildcats on Saturday 30th January (2pm KO) and whilst the recent cold snap has restricted the opportunity for field training sessions, McDermott is confident his team will overcome this annual frustration.

He said: “We make lots of plans for what we want to achieve in preseason but ultimately it is the weather that dictates what we can and cannot do.

“However even if we don’t get a field session between now and Wakefield, we will make it work.

“We have a very good relationship with the Lensbury and St Mary’s University who both provide us with excellent training facilities so we’re getting most things done.

“I am sure we will go into our first game against Wakefield confident and fully prepared.”

Quins got their preparations properly underway when they met their under 20s side in training match at Roehampton on Sunday.

And before the Super League opener, Harlequins face Crusaders Rugby League in the Jon Wells Testimonial match on Saturday 16th January (5pm KO), followed by London Skolars on Friday 22nd January (1.45pm KO).

McDermott explained that their recent preseason training camp at an Army base in Kent has prepared them well for their busy January schedule.

He added: “I’m very proud of how the squad handled themselves at Army camp. Several players told me that parts of the camp were the hardest thing they’d ever done in their lives.

“Most importantly though, they all found out a bit more about themselves and each other which bodes well for our team going into a new season.”
