West Ham United’s Jose Fonte played the full 90 minutes for Portugal yesterday, as they were held to a 2-2 draw by Mexico in their first game of the Confederations Cup in Russia.

The European Champions look set to take all three points, after Southampton’s Cedric Soares put them 2-1 up with four minutes to play, but Hector Moreno nodded home an injury time equaliser from a corner to secure Mexico a point.

Portugal’s Ricardo Quaresma and former Manchester United man Javier Hernandez were also on the score sheet.

Fonte lined up alongside Pepe at centre half, in what was the Irons defender’s 24th cap for his country.

The 33-year-old moved to the London Stadium from Southampton in January and made sixteen appearances for the Hammers before the end of the season.

Portugal are back in action in the Confederations Cup on Wednesday, when they face hosts Russia.
