Cray Wanderers moved up to fourth in the Isthmian South League table and stretched their unbeaten record to 12 games with a deserved if closely fought encounter with South Park at King Georges Field.

Cray, in the second of four consecutive away matches struck the decisive moment of the game in the 13th minute when Michael Frieter was on the end of a Jerome Federico cross for his second goal of the season.

Cray had an element of control of the game though they did have an element of fortune in the 41st minute when South Park were awarded a penalty and Kieran Lavery hit the spot kick well over the bar.

South Park perhaps edged the opening exchanges but it was Cray who went ahead with their first serious attack when the ball was worked down the right to Jerome Federico who put over a fine cross to the far post when Michael Frieter was in the right place to head the ball into the net.

The Wands came close again when Mitchell Nelson had a goal ruled out for a push following another good Federico cross.  Then Barney Williams hit a half volley wide of goal and then Jay Leader glanced a header fractionally past the right post from a Frieter free kick.

Cray had a let off in the 41st minute when South Park were awarded a penalty after Kieran Lavery was brought down in the area by Nelson.  However the usually reliable Lavery blazed his spot kick well over the bar.

Before half time Michael Power came close when he turned inside the area and pulled a shot just wide.

The second half was at times a bit of a stodgy affair but Cray did have other chances to put daylight between the teams.  From a Frieter corner to the far post a header from Leader was saved by the foot of Callum Thomas.  Federico fired in a shot which went into the arms of Thomas and Frieter drove a free kick wide from 30 yards then Power curled a free kick round the wall but was gathered by Thomas.

Cray held off the home sides attempts to get back into it with a disciplined display at the back and kept up their remarkable record of conceding just two goals in the ten away matches played this season.

Cray next head to Hastings United on Tuesday evening in good heart and look in fine fettle.
