Two goals in the first twenty five minutes were enough for Welling United to claim three valuable points against Poole Town.

Once more, Welling shuffled their forward line up as they looked to change their luck in front of goal.

Steve Devlin fired an early Poole free kick into the forecourt of the car dealers on the other side of Park View Road before Welling came close.

Matt Fish took a throw in and Harry Crawford collected and twisted before firing a low effort that Nick Hutchings saved at full length at the cost of a corner.

That was cleared out as far as Ali Fuseini who's shot was deflected wide for another corner on the other side.

Rhys Murrell-Williamson delivered to the far post for Rickie Hayles to head back across goal where Hutchings and Will Spetch got in a mess causing the keeper to push the ball into his own net.

Despite having been in the top five for most of the season, Poole struggled to contain Welling early on and Alex Cathline cut through their defence before shooting just wide.

Then it was the turn of Murrell-Williamson to let fly but his shot clattered the crossbar with Hutchings well beaten.

In form Marvin Brooks gave Luke Burbidge an opportunity to shoot for Poole, but he was also unable to keep his effort inside the ground.

At the other end, Hayles again caused havoc when heading down for Danny Waldren to fire a shot that was blocked by an upraised arm by a defender however the penalty was not awarded.

Moments later, Murrell-Williamson and Lewis Tallack tangled in the area and the Welling winger was left in a heap on the ground. This time, a spot kick was awarded, and after a long wait, Crawford sent Hutchings the wrong way.

Abdulai Baggie had a shot blocked before Murrell-Williamson swung over a free kick that was just out of the reach of Hayles.

Fuseini fired well over for Welling before Jordan Brown remained calm to put a Luke Roberts cross behind .

After the break, Welling continued to look for a third. First Waldren hit a first time effort just wide then Crawford failed to hit the target with a header from Dan Walker's cross.

Both teams continued to put efforts the wrong side of the post. Fuseini wasn't particularly close at one end then Brooks lacked accuracy from a Roberts cross.

It was then Roberts' turn to head wide from Devlin's corner before substitute Vas Karagiannis cut in and fired but his deflected shot was saved.

Crawford should have made the game safe when bursting through but his touch was too heavy as he rounded Hutchings and he lost the angle.

Roberts had a similar opportunity at the other end but Lewington made himself big and made a fine save.

As the game became more stretched, Karagiannis hit an effort inches wide then Fish headed a dangerous cross wide of his own net. Despite the linesman flagging for a corner, the referee awarded a goal kick which caused Poole manager Tom Killick to run onto the pitch to remonstrate.

Referee Elliott Kaye had no option other than to send Killick to the stand although a number of odd decisions both ways confused the management of each team.

Again Roberts broke through and again Lewington made an excellent save as Poole threw players forward.

Lewington then made a wonder save to keep out a Brooks close range volley but he could do nothing about Poole's next shot on goal. Harshly, Sean Francis was adjudged to have pushed Roberts and Devlin fired home from the spot.

Waldren came close to making it safe with a free kick that Hutchings did superbly then Walker missed a great chance when clean through, but again Hutchings made a good save.

Although, the referee extended the additional five minutes by a further two and a half, Poole didn't threaten again and Welling were delighted to claim the three points..
