Rain swept Park View Road greeted Welling United and Margate on New Year's Day in a reverse fixture of the game on Boxing Day.

Lewis Taylor at the first effort on goal but did not get a clean strike and it went harmlessly wide.

Harry Crawford had Welling's first effort cutting in but his shot went wide of the near post.

Valery Pajetat was then called into making a save when claiming Rickie Hayles header from Sam Hatton's corner.

Having led Margate a merry dance on Boxing Day, Christain Nanetti went on a run across the box but couldn't get enough curl on his shot to worry the keeper.

After seventeen minutes, the deadlock was broken. Nanetti was again the architect with an angled pass that played Crawford in and Welling's striker finished with a crisp drive into the bottom corner.

Crawford thought he was going to make it two soon after but Pajetat punched over off the top of his head injuring himself in the process. When play eventually restarted he made a great reaction save from Sean Francis at the far post from Hatton's delivery.

Sadly, for Margate they never really cleared their lines and while Francis was retreating, it broke to him allowing him to drive low from 20 yards just inside the post.

Charles Banya fired high over in a rare Margate attack before Matt Fish and Hatton both had shots saved.

It came as no real surprise when Welling made it three nil. Jordan Brown crossed from the left and George Oakley rose above Tarik Moore-Azille to head home.

Another cutting Welling attack almost produced a fourth when Danny Waldren's low drive was diverted just the wrong side of the post by Crawford.

Still Welling, continued to press and Nanetti fired over. He then crossed for Oakley but he couldn't keep his header down

Harry Girling, back on loan from Millwall, was rushed into a clearance for Welling but hit it so cleanly that it gave Adam Coombes the chance to outpace Moore-Azille but he was unable to lift his lob from a tight angle over Pajetat.

As the game approached first half injury time, Margate pulled a goal back. Taylor swung in a free kick and Ira Jackson volleyed home first time.

Ten minutes after the break, Welling restored their three goal lead. Nanetti's free kick was met first time by Francis and his clean flick gave Pajetat no chance.

Coombes added a fifth with possibly the best team goal of the season. A fifteen pass move involving all ten outfield players allowed Oakley to slide it through. Although Coombes' first effort was half stopped, Pajetat was helpless as Welling's leading scorer followed up to smash home.

Banya had a shot deflected over for Margate but with the game as good as over, Welling eased up

However, they did create one more chance when Nanetti sent Oakley clear but although he rounded Pajetat, the angle was too tight and he could only fire behind the net.

Both teams seemed satisfied to settle for that as Welling played keep ball for the remaining fifteen minutes with Margate camping in their own half to limit any further risk.
