Roarie Deacon fired Sutton United into the Third Round of the FA Cup with a last gasp winner against League Two Cheltenham Town on Saturday.

Deacon made the most of a Nicky Bailey pass in the 96th minute shooting low past goalkeeper Russell Griffiths sparking wild scenes of celebration to cap what was another unforgettable afternoon at Gander Green Lane.

All the ingredients were in place for a good old fashioned cup upset with the BBC cameras there to film Football Focus in anticipation of a shock and they weren't disappointed.

However, Sutton gave a rather tepid performance in the first half and were punished in the 35th minute when Danny Wright flicked the ball past goalkeeper Ross Worner to give the Robins the lead.

Whatever manager Paul Doswell said to his troops at half-time worked wonders because the U’s stunned the Gloucestershire side within a minute of the restart.

Bailey’s punt forward was flicked on by Maxime Biamou and the ball fell nicely for Matt Tubbs who marked his debut in style by slamming the ball into the net giving Griffths no chance.

Tubbs had only signed for Sutton on Thursday from Forest Green Rovers and his goal clearly helped his new team-mates raise their game.

Deacon was a constant thorn in Cheltenham's side, going close to scoring twice in the final stages – with a low shot from 12 yards and a dipping volley from the edge of the penalty area - before making it third time lucky with the headline-grabbing winner.

Since leaving Crawley Town in the summer, Deacon has been one of the outstanding performers in a Sutton shirt and has recently attracted interest from several football league clubs.

While acknowledging his side underperformed in the first period, Doswell was obviously delighted with the way the U's came from behind to claim their first Football League scalp since a 1-0 victory at Torquay United in 1993.

Speaking to SUFCtv, he said: "We were poor in the first half. We weren't really passing the ball, everyone looked a bit nervous and there were a few words at half-time.

"Fair play to them, I thought they went out there and put in a brilliant second half.

"Apart from the two goals, we created four or five fantastic opportunities and on another day Roarie could have had his hat-trick. I'm immensely proud of them and immensely pleased for everyone at the club."

The U's now go into the hat for tonight's Third Round draw where they could be paired with Premier League opposition.
