Six members from Epping Bowls Club scooped the honours in a competitive final weekend of action recently.

The season finale, which took place at the club’s home in Lower Bury Lane on Saturday, September 1 and Sunday, September 2, saw 22 members fight it out over the course of the competition in various categories.

Margaret Hopkinson was the biggest winner over the weekend after winning three titles.

She was crowned the Ladies Junior champion after defeating Anne Munro 22-10, before beating Marie Hammonton in both the Mixed Veterans and Ladies Consistency divisions.

Derek Childs was named Gents champion after a close fought game against Matt Jones, and he picked up his second title of the weekend in the Gents 4 Wood Pairs alongside Daniel Wackett, with the duo beating Bob Myers and Edward Panter 25-16.

Jones would show good character to bounce back from his defeat to Childs in the Gents Junior Championships by securing a 21-18 win over Graham Ballinger, while Peter Lumb got the better of club captain Ron Perryman in the Gents Consistency.

Barbara Langford also took home two titles, winning both the Ladies Championship and Handicap.

However, she was unable to make it a trio of crowns after being narrowly beaten by Peter Bates in the Chisholm Challenge.

Speaking about the weekend, Epping captain Perryman said: “We saw some great bowls played over two days. This is the highlight of our season, so it was good to see such close and competitive matches. The weather was kind and we were well supported by our members.”
