ENFIELD Town’s spluttering start to the season roared into life over the Bank Holiday weekend, with back-to-back wins elevating them to eighth in an early Isthmian Premier League table.

They picked up a first victory of the campaign in some style with a 4-0 battering on the road at Tooting and Mitcham on Saturday, and followed it up with a closely-fought victory against Harlow on Monday by a single goal.

For the second weekend in a row, Enfield breached the opposing backline four times - but unlike in last week’s 4-4 draw with Met Police, they were themselves stoic in defence at Imperial Fields.

The visitors had the lion’s share of possession before the break, and could have forged more goals than Rob Bartley’s header from a Sam Youngs free-kick.

From the off they had looked impressive in and out of possession, but could have kept home goalkeeper Kyle Merson busier for their first-half chances - Drew Roberts and Youngs were both guilty of missing opportunities when well placed.

They made the breakthrough eight minutes before the interval, and added a man advantage to their goal lead shortly after it - when Peter Wedgeworth was given a straight red card for a dangerous challenge on Mickey Parcell.

Tooting handed Enfield another gift when Merson passed a free-kick straight to Ryan Blake, who duly rounded the stranded goalkeeper to double their lead.

Another stray clearance landed at Roberts’ feet minutes later, giving the striker a simple chance to put the game beyond the hosts.

And he made it four moments later after beating Merson and home defender Dan Clements before firing in his second of the day.

Whereas Tooting had made life easy for Town, Harlow would prove a more stubborn nut to crack at the Queen Elizabeth II Stadium.

In fact, they nearly broke the hosts’ resistance inside 20 seconds, with Junior Dadson forcing Joe Wright into a low save.

Harlow kept up their domination but Wright had other ideas than to let them past.

Instead, it was Town who would strike first when Aaron Greene’s free-kick was turned in by Harlow’s James Shepherd, with Lady Luck still smiling on Enfield.

Dadson responded with an effort which smacked the post, although Roberts’ piledriver did likewise shortly before half-time.

Greene and Blake came close to doubling the lead after the break, but they held on for a narrow win.
