Enfield Ignatians matched Old Haberdashers for long periods and it was only in the final five minutes of Saturday’s game that the London Two North West leaders added a further three tries to run out flattering 31-11 victors.

Playing with the elements in the first period, Ignatians traded toe-to-toe with the visitors and opened the scoring via two Jordan Wilson penalties after Haberdashers were penalised for a late tackle and holding on.

The visitors responded with a penalty try and a try from Ian McGhee, but Ignatians had the final say of the first half after claiming a very well-taken try from Cairo Sango, off a set move, to trail 12-11 at the break.

Old Haberdashers lifted their game after the interval but Ignatians’ stubborn defence repeatedly thwarted the attacking ambitions of the visitors, until a late flurry by the league leaders - in the form of scores from Matt Lowcock, Conor Michaels and captain Simon Miller - sealed the outcome.

Captain Keir Bonnar said: “It was an excellent performance in many ways. We asked for a 80-minute performance after the Tabard loss and almost got one. The side were 100 per cent committed and, if anything, the final result doesn’t quite reflect the game.”

Enfield will hope to end their season on a high when they travel to Hampstead on Saturday.

Ignatians Seconds lost their final league game in Herts-Middlesex Merit Table Two following a 20-10 away defeat to Cheshunt Seconds.

The visitors consoled themselves with tries from James Rawlinson and Stuart Blemings.

The two sides will meet again this weekend in their plate semi-final of their league competition.

Enfield Thirds were beaten 47-17 by Fullerians Thirds in Herts-Middlesex Merit Table Four.

Playing well in patches, the blue and golds ran in three tries via Tom Sears, playing his first senior game, Glory Makabukidi and Clive Alexander.

They face Black Horse in the semi-final of their league cup competition on Saturday.
