Harry Kane hit his second hat-trick in a week as Tottenham thrashed Stoke City at White Hart Lane.

Spurs responded to the disappointment of crashing out of the Europa League midweek with a dominant display to move up to second in the Premier League.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side had not scored from open play in their last three league games, but three goals in 23 minutes from Kane followed by a Dele Alli strike on the verge of half time secured the win.

Despite Tottenham’s good play in the first half, the visitors were almost gifted the lead on 12 minutes when Joe Allen flashed wide after Mousa Dembele carelessly gave the ball away on the edge of the area.

Two minutes later however, Spurs were ahead courtesy of a sloppy piece of defending at the other end.

Alli’s attempted through ball to Christian Eriksen bobbled off the heels of Ryan Shawcross and into the path of Kane, who rifled home a first-time effort to chalk up his 100th goal in club football.

Stoke were perhaps fortunate to not go a man down, when referee Jonathan Moss decided Glenn Whelan’s two-footed challenge on Jan Vertonghen only warranted a yellow card.

Shortly after the Potters could have levelled after Erik Pieters found Peter Crouch with a good cross, before the former Tottenham man’s shot was blocked by Hugo Lloris.

Spurs began to pile on the pressure as the half wore on and Vertonghen rattled the crossbar after being given space to bring down a corner inside the area.

Tottenham were able to find an all-important second in the 22nd minute, when another corner fell to Kane on the edge of the box before he directed left-footed drive past Lee Grant in the Stoke goal.

Five minutes later, Kane completed a first half hat-trick with a low, 30-yard effort, which took a deflection off the wall and into the net after he was teed up by a short Eriksen free kick.

Kane then turned provider in injury time at the end of the half, beating Bruno Martins Indi before playing a ball square to give Alli a simple finish at the far post.

Toby Alderweireld put in a characteristically assured performance, but will give Spurs cause for concern after he limped off after 50 minutes.

Kane was keen to add even more to his tally after the break and would have bagged his fourth of the day with a curling effort if it were not for a sprawling save from Grant.

The win moves Tottenham back above Manchester City into second place in the table, ten points behind leaders Chelsea.

Spurs will now turn their attention to Everton, who visit White Hart Lane next Sunday.
