Croydon school pupils claimed 14 gold medals at the Surrey Schools Championships at Kingsmeadow last weekend.

Split into north and south teams, the north won six golds while the south got eight, four of which came from Whitgift School pupils.

Stefan Amokwandoh won the intermediate triple jump with a 13.27m leap and Ocean Schwartz jumped a personal best 1.90m to win the intermediate high jump, while Will Varcoe took the junior 80m hurdles in 12.13 seconds and Ben Deuchar won the junior javelin with a 37.98m throw.

The south’s other golds came through Omar Reid, (senior boys’ discus, 37.40m), Sophia Henlon (junior girls’ 100m 12.65), Ashleigh Clarke (intermediate girls’ 200m, 25.62) and Iyani Obi-Adewole (senior girls’ discus, 34.63m).

Imani Lansiquot and Anieshka Mido were the star performers for North Croydon as they both set championship best records.

Lansiquot ran 11.98 to win the intermediate girls’ 100m and Mido threw 35.05m to win the intermediate girls’ hammer competition.

Other north winners for the north were Adesimi
Obi-Adewole (intermediate boys’ discus, 40.87m), Alex Mackintosh (senior boys’ high jump, 1.81m), Adia-May MacHenry (junior girls’ high jump, 1.54m) and Sophie Foreman (senior girls’ 3,000m, 10:33.99).

Croydon Harriers Emma and Zoe Fossett were both competing for South Surrey and won their competitions. Emma triumphed in the intermediate girls’ javelin with a 33.67m throw and Zoe’s 10.34m jump won the senior girls’ triple jump.

South London Harrier Tom Holden, a pupil at Wilson’s School, won the intermediate boys’ 1,500m in 4:03.68 for Sutton.
