Gianfranco Zola's Watford need extra-time to beat Wycombe Wanderers in Capital One Cup
5:40pm Saturday 11th August 2012 in Local Sports
By Frank Smith, Deputy Group Sports Editor
Watford needed extra-time to progress in the Capital One Cup against Wycombe Wanderers but Chris Iwelumo’s goal ensured Gianfranco Zola’s first competitive game in charge of the club ended in victory.
It was a poor spectacle for much of the contest as neither side created much of note and the game was settled in the 110th minute when Matej Vydra, whose performance was a highlight, set up Iwelumo to bundle home.
Three of Watford’s summer signings started the game - Manuel Almunia, Almen Abdi and Vydra - and Ikechi Anya was on the bench.
Fellow signings Daniel Pudil, Fitz Hall and Steve Leo Beleck joined the lengthy list of players absent due to injury or fitness issues and as expected, Daniel Geijo was also unavailable.
A young Hornets side impressed at Gillingham on Tuesday night but Vydra was the only one who retained his place.
It was good work from the young forward on the left which led to Watford’s first chance two minutes into the contest. He released Dickinson and at the second attempt, the full back picked out Jonathan Hogg, who headed narrowly wide under pressure.
But Wycombe went even closer minutes later when Almunia parried what should have been a routine save from Joel Grant’s long-range shot into the path of Richard Logan. The goalkeeper did well to get a hand to Logan’s follow-up and the ball looped up and trickled narrowly wide.
The Wycombe striker headed the ball into the net from the resulting corner but the whistle had already blown.
After a frantic start to the contest, very little happened for the rest of the half. Watford were not moving the ball as freely and there was very little attacking intent.
Ironically, Watford’s next chance came after a 40-yard diagonal ball from Eustace, which picked out the run of Garner. But the striker was always going to struggle to test Nikki Bull with his backwards header.
There was one last shot at goal for Watford before the break when Mark Yeates turned his man well on the edge of the area but his shot was tame and easily saved by Bull.
The Hornets could have gone into the break behind when Anthony Stewart beat Lloyd Doyley to a header from Matt Spring’s free kick with the final attack of the half but the ball went wide of the far post.
Watford started the second half much brighter and had two half-chances early on. First, good work from Vydra saw the forward lay the ball back to Garner but he mishit the ball as he went to strike. Then Yeates swung in a cross-shot which almost caught out Bull and went narrowly wide of the far post.
It was still a largely uneventful game and Wycombe’s management team would certainly have been the happier.
Garner forced a routine save from Bull, Spring had an effort from distance deflected over and Logan shot well wide. But apart from those efforts, there was little to keep the 5,343 spectators entertained.
Watford should have gone behind with just over a quarter of an hour remaining when Logan beat the offside trap and ran clean through but a poor touch, and then even worse finish, saw him hit the side netting from eight yards out.
The home side had to wait until the 78th minute for their next chance when Abdi headed wide Yeates’ corner.
Moments later Wycombe went close again when Stuart Lewis had Almunia scrambling with a 30-yard strike which went just wide.
With minutes of normal time left, both sides had decent chances to win it.
Wycombe should have had a one-on-one opportunity when Wood had the chance to slip Spring through but he under-cooked the pass and a challenge was made, although the rebound needed to be tipped over by Almunia.
Then deep into injury time, Yeates had a free kick deflected over the bar and then Wycombe’s goalkeeper had to make a sliding challenge at the resulting corner.
Watford were the first to have a chance in extra-time as Abdi and Vydra linked up well on the left, with the latter having a shot blocked and then Chris Iwelumo flicking wide.
The breakthrough finally came in the 110th minute when Abdi released Vydra on the right and he chipped the ball over the on-rushing Bull and despite slipping over in the process, Iwelumo bundled home from three yards out.
The Hornets could have added a second soon after when a cross-field pass from Hogg led to Forsyth and Yeates doubling up on the left. Yeates picked out Abdi unmarked on the edge of the area but the ball bounced up and the midfielder snatched at the shot and it sailed over.
Wycombe continued to search for the winner and felt they should have had a penalty when Grant Basey’s cross may have hit the arm of Hogg, but it wasn’t given and Watford progressed to the next round.

Today was pretty dull, but Vydra looks sharp and lively, Almunia looks solid and we are starting to try and keep the ball. All positives, all things we have been complaining about the whole of last season.
Give the team a chance.

Well I think Zola is blending his new signings in gently, as he's aware that too many changes at once would not work.
Now as you lot preached to me last year, give the man a chance

yeats was useless had ball more than most and always wanted to cut inside and shoot..never passes the ball and crossing was woeful...Abdi who you said was useless is strong wins a tackle and see balls that other players need to get used to. He is used to playing with quality players in italy and will be excellent as the season goes on..funny how we see different games...but just to let you know i'm right !!!!!!

Doyley-you can't even think of playing him in a team playing passing football.
Dickenson-pretty poor all round.
Nosworthy-went to sleep from the 2nd half onwards.
Taylor-didn't seem match fit.
Eustace-pretty anonymous.
Hogg-not good.
Yeates-couldn't cross the road.
Abdi-finding his feet.
Vydra-was ok,but nowhere as effective as at Gillingham.
Garner-waste of space,bin him.
Subs:
Hodson-poor,I thought he played well at gillingham mid week.
Forsyth-ok,but other players dont seem to want to pass to him.
Iwelumo-did his best to miss his goal,he really is not a professional footballer in my opinion.
The youngsters played well 1st half at Gillingham, playing a short passing game, but I think this style of play is beyond most of our senior players.
Lets hope the Zola revolution starts soon,or are we looking at another Vialli nightmare.

Stop comparing Zola to Vialli, the only thing they have in common is they are both Italian
And it amazes me how any Watford team ever lift theirselves with our pathetic support

Yeates poor
Garner poor
defence missed Mapps
Hogg & Eustace - back to periods of last season when seem t play better when only one in the team
Murray will make a difference
For me the 4-3-3 didn't work especially against WW 5 in midfield where Springy run the show - Joel Grant looked good first half too.
Forsyth may provide some width & height but I'm not sure about his ability to tackle a fish suuper so I dont see him in a defensive role.
Early days - If Vydra played better at Gillingham he had some game - I agee with the "young Helgusson" comment.

I am far from Anti-Watford,I support the Club, players come and go,I feel I am justified as a lifetime supporter to comment on anything, positive or negative.I accept everyone has their own opinion, but I find that people take offence when I voice mine.
I have been called a mug for the crime of living in Milton Keynes, and told to watch Luton because i was underwhelmed by our new goalkeeper.
I really wish I could be a real Watford fan like most of you, always finding positives, cheering every ex player that turns up,and raises their game.Good old Doyley,Watford through and through, the fact that no-one ever came in for him has nothing to do with it.I'm just a grumpy old geezer who the club can do without,my negative vibes are putting a dampener on that famous Vicarage Road roar.

We not only have had a change of ownership, a new manager and 90% of the coaching staff, lost our player of the season, integrating 7 new players into the squad and most importantly totally changing the formation and style of football that we are playing and you actually expect us to be the finished article on day 1 in front of 5000 in the Micky Mouse cup, unreal!!!
Our support if that is what some of you call it is perthetic.
Considering GFZ has stated that he still expects to bring in another one or two, and with several of the new arrivals expected to be up to speed with fitness shortly, I will be surprised if several of the starting line up today are nothing more than back up squad players this season at best.
Our ball retention, awareness and one and two touch passing is already there to see, admittedly pushing this into the final third is still work in progress but will gel over the coming weeks.
Impressed with ALL of the the new arrivals seen to date and if any criticism at all it would be at the feet of some of the players that remain from last season who if they were to be totally honest are probably not up to the GFZ project and will be departing shortly.
So if you are expecting nothing but perfection you have jumped on the old bandwagon a little too soon, would suggest you hold off for a season ticket unit we have secured our place in the Prem.

The new signing to be announced is a striker and he is after another midfield player apparently so he can finally bench warm or pass on Chris and hopefully we can start to gel and finish. Do not expect a win at Palace our boogey team although with Ambrose now gone who knows. Also lutondown no need for a dig at Dyche he may not have got us playing pretty football but he gave us hope and results with it, not sure how that makes people small minded, not giving managers a chance from the beginning or a few games in only is small minded though, remind you of anyone!
A lot of you couldn't wait to come on and slate yet gave Dyche all the time he needed . I suppose this is because he adhered to your small minded mentality of a hybrid rugby style along with the fact he was a labouring centre back.
Well I think Zola is blending his new signings in gently, as he's aware that too many changes at once would not work.
Now as you lot preached to me last year, give the man a chance

I think in order for Zolas style to work he needs to rid himself of the perennial toe punters and for the fans to actually back their team.
After 90 minutes I heard booing in the upper rous ( though far more clapped) WTF is that about? That is not the behaviour of any true fan.
I really think its time Watford fans had a look at themselves, and see the nasty insidious side that has crept into our support. And no Corby, I might not of liked a managers style, but never have I booed my team.

Almunia-had a few Loach moments,not a convincing display.

Also without doubt we have to be fair
to him, give him time to settle and assess just as some of us did with Sean, so patience is the key word.
However we struggle to score against Wycombe and our two substitutions in normal time are adjustments at full back. Garner plys for 90 inutes and continues to be totally ineffective against Wycombe as he was against Spurs and has played more matches than most. We are told Iwelumo is unlikely to suit GFZ's plans but as a sub he has twice shown that he creates some discomfort unlike the guy he replaced. Forsyth and Yeates did their usual and produced little.
On the plus side I thoughthe new signings Vydra, Alumnia and Abdi played well and if others once fit contribute as much we will be more than ok.
Overall a dreadful game, whch may dent the confidence but help the fitness levels.

It was good to sit with true Watford fans, who though was witnessing a transitional team in a transitional period, and willing to give a true football genius the time he needs to build a new Watford.
Ive been a fan for more years than I care to remember, and for large chunks of that we have had this purveyor of awful football labelled onto us. Well I saw enough yesterday to be convinced that when we get the final third right, and the dross of last year replaced we will succeed.
Nothing I've seen yet will dampen my optimism for our future.

Their are 9 new additions some who are moving to a new country and culture who are supposed to hit the ground running to appease the negative minority, they will take time to adjust and I am sure Zola noes this from his own experience.. They have said it is a project not a revolution. So FFs give it some time.
One last thing I was not Sean dyches biggest fan, having watched him on Ssn yesterday big respect to the man. No hint of bitterness or resentment, total pro who if successful over a longer period would have moved on, as will Zola one day. So let's get real hey. Ho.

mkgoldenboys wrote:You must of been that gent with the white stick. Almunia did not put a foot wrong.
Almunia-had a few Loach moments,not a convincing display.

Just found your post really mirroring mine above. I live in Texas and have been a loyal fan since 1968 ... I get to see my beloved Horns about twice a year and always am disappointed at the lack of atmosphere and negativity at the Vic these days. You and I have clearly got much more excited about the start of the new season from 5,000 miles distant than the majority of those living in W23!

The manager is not a miracle worker and think we give him a fair chance. After all he has only been in charge for one month.
I have no doubt in him as our leader , we are very lucky to have got him.
Trust me if players under perform then they will be replaced. To play poorly and win was just one of a few bonuses on saturday. Vydra excellent,Almunia steady. Two positives out of the game..Hint, hint doubters both new signings.

dennis booth and ??. we won first game away, lost at home to york and kept winning or drawing, but that was a different time and a different league.
What we do know is Alumnia looks very good, Vydra and Abdi will get there so the first three signings we have seen are all looking good. So well done Zola.
I am sure others will come up to scratch and with the hard core of players from last year, Hogg,Eustace, Bauben, Taylor, Nosworthy and Murray we will be a tough team to beat.
others have to go out on loan including two or three of the current starters who came in last year, but we will be OK.
What is alarming is the lack of fitness of some of the new boys, they should have played more in pre season but for whatever reason have not been able to. hopefully they will soon be up and running and contributing.
For those who praise the style of football and say it will happen up front soon, it will not whilst we are led by Garner. He is a lightweight who does not hold the ball up well, has difficulty scoring this season like last year, but i am equally sure GFZ has a plan for that problem and players to fill the gap already here or about to arrive.
As for booing it happens, I really dislike it during the game but at the end if they have not tried give them hell, but this week the game was terrible but I think most tried. Hogg at times played like a target man and was not at his best but 110% effort and well done to Wycombe for having a real go

Just seen your contribution, if I am one of the two you re referring to then I would point out that I made my comments on Sat at 9.48, 24 hours or so earlier than you.
Incidentally you made the brave stand alone statement that you would make a donation of £100 if Garner scored 5 goals or more.
I am hopeful that the lad could become a decent player but I am definitely not confident enough to wager £5 let
alone £100. Let's face it for £100 I
could probably buy him!!
