Allan Nyom rampaging forward from right-back has been one of Watford’s trademarks during the opening weeks of their Premier League campaign.

It’s safe to say the Cameroonian has easily adapted to English football and that is partly down to Hornets striker Odion Ighalo.

“He has helped me very much,” Nyom said after the Golden Boys’ 0-0 draw with Southampton on Sunday.

“We played at Granada together and I would stay with him every day. I know him very well.

“He speaks English too, which means when I joined he was able to help me. That has made it easier to get to know my team-mates.”

And it is likely Nyom’s Watford teammates have been impressed with the Cameroon international.

The 27-year-old had been linked with a move to Watford on several occasions before finally making the switch from Udinese this summer.

Leaving the Italian club wasn’t a difficult decision. Nyom may have been a Zebrette player for six years but he didn’t make a single first-team appearance for Udinese.

Instead he spent that time on loan at fellow Pozzo-owned club Granada and helped the Spanish side rise from the third tier of Spanish football to the top flight.

Nyom thrived in La Liga. He competed against the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and Neymar and more than held his own. He was even linked with a move to Barcelona last year.

That reported interest may have never come to fruition but Barcelona’s loss is Watford’s gain.

Nyom is enjoying life in the Premier League and says he will only get better in the coming months.

“I played six years at Granada and I enjoyed it there,” he explained. “It wasn’t difficult to leave though.

"I played a lot of games for Granada but I needed a change this summer. In England we run too much. The intensity is very different to Spanish football. It’s so different here.”

Having a Spanish head coach in Quique Sanchez Flores has also helped Nyom’s transition. “When he discusses tactics he translates for me. That has helped,” he said.

“And I knew Ighalo, but also Ikechi [Anya]. We have very good players here at Watford but they are all very kind too.”

Nyom has settled into a Watford defence that has only been breached in one Premier League game, the opening day 2-2 draw at Everton.

The Hornets’ two subsequent top flight fixtures have ended goalless with Flores’ side not managing to truly threaten the opposition goal – something Nyom insists isn’t an issue.

He said: “We can stay in the Premier League, definitely. We’ve played very well and we are fighting. We have been unlucky not to score in the last two games.”

“It is not a problem,” he added. “We are learning in training different ways of creating chances to score goals.”
