Orient head coach Ian Hendon admits putting together a squad that all want to play for the football club has been crucial in firing them to the top of League Two.

The O’s are the only team in the Football League with a 100 per cent record after taking maximum points from their opening four games.

Hendon took over the side this summer and has undergone a major overhaul of the squad following their relegation after letting the players that wanted to leave move on.

A group of 16 have left the club, mostly after their contracts expired, while nine have arrived and the results since have been extremely encouraging.

Speaking after Saturday’s 3-2 win at Newport County, Hendon said: “They were coming off the back of a relegation and I think the key thing was to speak to the players first and foremost because some just didn’t want to be here.

“If the players don’t want to be at the football club then they go, it’s as simple as that. That’s what we’ve done and we cleared out those that didn’t want to be here and brought players here that do.

“They want to play for this football club, want to play for me and want to play for each other so it’s a good place to be at the moment.”

Orient are setting the early pace with a two-point lead at the top of League Two but Hendon is adamant there is no magic formula for their success.

He said: “Myself and my staff have come in and just started afresh. That’s all that we can say. I’m doing my job how I think I should do it and at the moment it’s going well. We’re not getting carried away with our start.

“We will try to win every game we play but there’s no magical formula. We’ve set the players up to play and put our trust in them and they go and perform and do the things we’re asking and we’re getting the results at the moment.”

Hendon added: “It’s been fantastic. Winning is a good habit to get into. As I said we did it by hook or by crook. It’s been a good start but we’re only four games into a 46-match season so onto the next one now.”
