Steven Berghuis has, as expected, become Watford's tenth summer signing after the Golden Boys confirmed the winger's arrival on a four-year deal from AZ Alkmaar.

The 23-year-old joins the Golden Boys for an undisclosed fee, believed to be around £4.2 million.

AZ announced on Thursday Watford had come to a verbal agreement to sign the wideman, who spent three years with the Dutch side.

And speaking to Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf last week, Berghuis said: “Watford and AZ have a couple of small points after an agreement.

“What it is all about, I do not know. But John van den Brom [the coach at AZ Alkmaar] and Earnie Stewart [the technical director] assured me that it will be fine.

“My father, brother and I have been in London last week. I’m an emotional person and just want to go to a club and I feel comfortable there. It was a visit without any expectations, but I’m certainly open to Watford.”

Berghuis began his career at FC Twente but made just 16 appearances for the club either side of a loan spell at VVV-Venlo.

He joined Alkmaar in 2012 for a reported fee of £400,000 and went on to make 27 appearances during the 2012/2013 season. However, only ten of those were starts.

The following campaign proved much more productive for Berghuis. He played 41 times for AZ and netted ten times.

The previous season was Berghuis’s most prolific and his form alerted several sides in Europe, as well as the Hornets.
