With athletics’ reputation in the gutter of late, it fell to Usain Bolt to light up the Olympic Stadium once more as the Anniversary Games took place over the weekend.

The event, which is now part of the IAAF Diamond League schedule, took place at the same venue as the 2012 Olympic Games on the third anniversary on the competition.

Friday night saw the affable Jamaican bounce back to form in stunning fashion, twice clocking 9.87 to win gold in the 100m after failing to break ten seconds previously this season.

Closer to home, Brit Mo Farah put his own troubles behind him to clinch gold in the 3,000m with stadium record time of 7.34.66 at a venue which he holds close to his heart.

He enthused: “I got amazing support which was incredible. It meant everything to me tonight, this is where I made my name and it changed my life to win and become Olympic champion here."

Zharnel Hughes picked up the first British win of the event, running a personal best time of 20.05 in the men's 200m.
