Leyton Orient head coach Ian Hendon admits he needs to bring in additions to the squad but is prepared to be patient for the right players.

The O's have a relatively small squad after a cluster of summer departures with Nathan Clarke and in all probability Shane Lowry the next to leave Brisbane Road.

Orient are expected to sign trialist defenders Connor Essam and Frazer Shaw after featuring throughout pre-season but Hendon will not be rushed into adding to the squad before the new season begins in less than a fortnight.

Speaking after the side's 3-0 win at Colchester United, Hendon said: "We are going to be making signings for sure. There is a lot of work still going on behind the scenes. When we look at the squad and the senior players we need additions.

"But they've got to be the right additions. We're not just going to take players willy nilly. They've got to fit what we need and how we play.

"There are a few out there that we are dealing with as we speak and I'm sure they will be in for the start of the season. If they take a little longer they take a little longer. But on what you've seen today I'd be quite happy if that was my squad going into the first game."

The League Two club want to buy Peterborough United midfielder Jack Payne, after his trial in Spain, but the two clubs appear to be some way apart in terms of agreeing a deal.

Hendon said: "We're speaking. I spoke to Barry Fry (director of football) on Friday and just waiting for a reply from him. It's a work in progress and we need to have a happy medium but we're trying to sign the lad that's for sure."

Former Wales international defender Danny Gabbidon played the second half of yesterday's win at Colchester and the O's, who have a young squad, are considering offering a deal to the 35-year-old after his summer exit from Cardiff City.

Hendon said: "He's another ex-Hammer. But you can see from the shape of him, Danny's an excellent pro who brings a wealth of experience so we're having a look at him. He's having a look at us and we'll see what happens."
