Troy Deeney’s memorable weekend has continued after he was named in the Professional Footballers' Association Championship Team of the Year.

Having captained and scored in Watford’s promotion-clinching 2-0 victory at Brighton & Hove Albion yesterday, the 26-year-old has been named in the side that is selected by his fellow professionals.

Deeney’s citatation on the PFA website reads: “A product of the Aston Villa youth system, Troy made well over a hundred appearances for Walsall before joining Watford in 2010.

A lifelong Birmingham City fan, he has the Second City club’s crest tattooed on his leg, but he is very much part of the Watford family now.

On April 6, by scoring in a 2-0 win over promotion rivals Middlesbrough, he became the first Watford player to score 20 goals in three successive seasons.”

The Hornets' current Player of the Season was shortlisted for the Championship Player of the Year at last weekend’s Football League awards but that honour went to Middlesbrough’s Patrick Bamford. However, the on-loan Chelsea forward did not make the PFA side.

The PFA Championship Team of the Year is: Keiren Westwood (Sheffield Wednesday); Simon Francis (Bournemouth), Richard Keogh (Derby County), Russell Martin (Norwich City), George Friend (Middlesbrough); Matt Ritchie (Bournemouth), Grant Leadbitter (Middlesbrough); Bakary Sako (Wolverhampton Wanderers), Alex Pritchard (Brentford); Daryl Murphy (Ipswich Town), Troy Deeney (Watford).
