His contract is understood to be up in the summer but Slavisa Jokanovic reiterated again this week that his future is the last thing on his mind.

The Hornets’ head coach is understood to have agreed a deal until the summer when he joined the club in October.

It is unclear whether the club have the option of an additional year and the Serbian and Watford have refused to discuss the issue.

Usually that would cause alarm bells for a club’s supporters and often the manager or head coach himself but Jokanovic has long stated he has little regard for his immediate future. He is here to do a job.

Jokanovic took a jovial approach to the question of how long his contract was and if there was indeed an option when asked yesterday (Thursday).

“You must ask me tomorrow, I need to check my contract,” Jokanovic said laughing.

The head coach was brought to the club with the clear mandate of securing promotion, ideally via a top-two finish.

It would be surprising if he didn’t remain at Watford next season, regardless of the outcome to the current campaign, considering the progress he has made in recent months.

But a month is a long time in football and there has been speculation in the media that Sunderland could be interested in acquiring the 46-year-old’s services.

Jokanovic took a similar approach when asked if he was aware of the reports regarding the Black Cats.

He said: “I am not thinking about any other things. All of the other things will happen in the future. I am not important now, there are more important things.

“I don’t want to spend my time on them. I am happy here and am Watford head coach. In front of me is an important job and my plan is to complete this job.

“I am only concentrated on what is in front of us.”
