Watford didn’t have to work too hard to defeat Rotherham United 3-0 last night. It wasn’t a vintage display from the Hornets although a few players did impress. But who was the Golden Boys’ man of the match?
Central defender Craig Cathcart was deployed at right-back. It is a role the defender has played in the past and he easily slotted into the position.
The Northern Ireland international was reliable in defence and showed he is more than comfortable with the ball when he advanced forward.
Ben Watson anchored the three-man Watford midfield and performed an important role in front of the back four. He broke up numerous attacks and while his passing was simple, it was effective.
Almen Abdi played in a free role behind Troy Deeney and Odion Ighalo and it was a position that suited the Swiss midfielder perfectly.
He was able to drift into space, play clever passes and create openings for himself and his teammates.
He should have got on the scoresheet but missed from close range following a Deeney cross and then hit the post in second half stoppage time.
Ighalo was named the sponsors’ man of the match. The Nigerian notched twice in the game to take his tally in 2015 to thirteen Championship goals.
