LUKE Blackledge wants to fight for the British title after securing victory over Bulgarian Konstantin Alexandrov at King George’s Hall at the weekend.

Blackledge won all eight rounds against Alexandrov in Blackburn.

The 24-year-old has previously fought Rocky Fielding for the Commonwealth title, suffering a knockout defeat, but he has rebuilt since then and believes he is now ready to for British honours.

Paul Smith is the current holder of the British super middleweight title but the Liverpudlian stepped up to fight Arthur Abraham for the world title in September.

Smith could now be set for a rematch with Abraham so Blackledge wants the British title to be made vacant.

“There’ll be bigger fights in the pipeline for next year,” he said of his plans. “Basically for the next year I want to chase after the WBO or Commonwealth because I feel that I’m at that that level now, or the British title.

“Paul Smith is fighting Arthur Abraham again so why can’t me, Tobias Webb, Callum Smith or Frank Buglioni fight for his title?

“It’s just sitting there doing nothing.”

Swansea’s Tobias Webb was also victorious on the King George’s Hall card, comfortably overcoming Elvis Dube in a six-rounder.

Blackledge’s opponent Alexandrov was fighting in England for the first time, after being called upon at a few days’ notice.

“I won every round, easy night’s work to be honest,” Blackledge said. “He caught me with one good shot in the early rounds but I boxed his head off.

“In the fifth round my right hand got hurt, I bruised all my knuckles so I just worked my jab and left hooks instead,” said Blackledge following the fight.

“My hand’s a bit sore so I’ll have to be careful with that, but I’m going back into the gym.

“I’ve just got a feeling that a big fight is going to come up, so I’m going to get back in the gym and keep myself fit so that I’ll be ready.

“Tobias Webb won on the same night so that could be a future fight.”

Blackledge reserved a message for the fans who watched him in action on Saturday.

“Thanks for all the support, and to my family,” he said. “I’d also like to thank my manager Steve Wood for everything that he has done for me.”

Colne’s unbeaten welterweight Shayne Singleton also cruised to victory in Blackburn on Saturday, winning all six rounds against Adam Jones.

AJ Faizy claimed the only knockout of the night as he stopped Londoner Mark McKray inside two rounds, although the Darwen boxer overcome a real scare himself as he was knocked down in the first round.

Blackburn’s Qasim Niaz shrugged off an ongoing shoulder problem to ease past journeyman Matthew Ashmole on points.

But fellow Blackburn fighter Ali Shah’s hopes of progressing to a Commonwealth light middleweight title eliminator suffered a real blow as he slipped to a narrow 58-57 points loss in his six-rounder against the unbeaten Mick Hall.

It was only Shah’s second defeat in nine professional bouts.

Also on the bill, Morecambe’s unbeaten super featherweight Isaac Lowe beat Lithuanian Simas Volosinas.
