Watford signed Steve Sherwood from Chelsea for £3,000.
Despite being at various stages second choice behind Andy Rankin, Eric Steele and Tony Coton, Sherwood racked up almost 300 appearances for the Hornets, being the only player to be in the squad throughout Graham Taylor's first spell as manager.
He played in all four divisions for Watford, and missed only a handful of games during the three-season spell that saw promotion to the top flight, a second-place finish and a run to the FA Cup final.
