Fly-half Frankie Murray has been at Sutton & Epsom for 19 years, so he is in the perfect position to claim the side are playing some of their best ever rugby.

The 27-year-old is part of the first team enjoying a rich vein of form in London Division One South.

Going into the international break two weeks’ ago, Sutton & Epsom had won six from six and sat fifth in the table.

They resumed action in the league last weekend in similar style, winning 36-14 at Twickenham to climb to third – including tries from James Caddy (two), Steve Munford, Kyren Ghumra and Sam Hurley.

Murray, who made his 101st first team appearance on Saturday, said: “We didn’t start the season in great form, we had the players, but we had not clicked as a team.

“But now we’re flying, and it is all down to getting more than 30 lads down to training every Tuesday and Thursday.

“It makes such a difference because you can play a firsts v seconds game, you can run through game plays.”

He added: “We’ve brought in a couple of new names in Steve Munford and Mickey Pointing.

“Steve has been phenomenal with the boot and he leads by example, while playing alongside Pointing, pictured, is like having another coach on the pitch.

“Everyone follows Mickey around the pitch, it’s like having four extra players, he’s that good.

“Both guys are former Sutton lads, but they have been playing at a higher level and the experience they have brought with them is fantastic.

“I am lucky that I have the best back row I have ever played with alongside me at moment, all I have to do is pass the ball to them and they do the rest, they’re making me look good.

Sutton host table-topping Wimbledon this weekend, with head coach Jeff Parsons feeling the pressure for more reasons than one.

“We were a little worried going into the break having that decent run and then having a week off, we thought it might cause a few problems,” he said.

“But we went about Twickenham in a very professional way and, given the soggy conditions, we played some of the best rugby I’ve ever seen us play.”

He added: “Wimbledon are flying high, scoring loads of points, but the pressure is on us to maintain our winning run.

“Nick [Easter] and Tim [Payne] have really added something to the side, and the fact we’re neighbours gives the game some added spice, it should be a great one.”
