Millwall were able to end a run of eight Championship games without a win with a 1-0 victory over Cardiff City in last weekend’s early kick off.

A solitary goal from former Watford defender Danny Shittu was sufficient to claim a needed three points; their first win since beating Blackpool on August 30. The club now sit in 15th position in the table – rising from 18th with their third home win of the season.

The result against Cardiff rounded off an impressive October for Ian Holloway’s men, which saw four matches without defeat, including goalless draws against Wigan and League leaders Derby County; both of which came away from home.

Their other tie, a 3-3 draw against Wolves, saw the club battle back from a 3-0 deficit to claim a point, courtesy of two late Ricardo Fuller goals. The Jamaican striker, who joined the club in the summer from relegation zone dwelling Blackpool, is currently Millwall’s leading scorer, managing three goals in 14 appearances.

Away from the Championship, Millwall defeated Wycombe Wanderers 1-0 in the first round of the Capital One Cup, before being knocked out by high flying Southampton at The Den. The club have not progressed past the second round of the tournament since 2011.

Holloway used the summer transfer window to strengthen his side without much money; bringing in six players (including Fuller) on free transfers, with a further two joining the club on loan; including Watford owned striker Mathias Ranégie.

In addition, the club brought in forward Lee Gregory from Halifax Town for an undisclosed fee. Despite jumping up from The Conference, the 26 year old seems to have adapted to his new surroundings well, scoring two goals in eight appearances; tied second in the club’s scoring table with defender Mark Beevers.

Millwall will be keen to avoid a repeat of the 4-0 drubbing they endured the last time the two sides met at Vicarage Road; on Boxing Day 2013; a result that led to the sacking of manager Steve Lomas after 24 games in charge.

Since their promotion back into the Championship in 2009, Millwall have travelled to Watford four times and have only managed a single goal, coming in a 2-1 loss in the 2011/12 season.

In team news, Millwall look to be without a natural left back, with both Scott Malone and Matthew Briggs struggling to return from injuries sustained in recent weeks. However, skipper Alan Dunne will be eligible for selection, after his one game suspension for collecting five yellow cards this season.

Millwall Starting XI vs Cardiff City (25/10/14): Forde; Wilkinson, Shittu, Beevers, Briggs; Upson, Williams, Martin, McDonald, Gregory, Fuller.
