Leyton Orient have rejected Cardiff City's approach for manager Russell Slade, although the O's have stated their boss "asked for permission" to talk to the Championship club.

The Championship club are understood to have made Slade their number one target but the O's have turned down an approach for him.

This comes just one week after Orient owner Francesco Becchetti gave Slade an ultimatum to get a result at Notts County. But following talks after their 1-1 draw on Tuesday night it was agreed the manager would stay on in his role.

Speaking after Saturday's win at Scunthorpe United, Slade said: "Communication, I think they [Cardiff City] may have requested permission to talk to me but I am uncertain,” revealed Slade. “I am a little bit in the dark; I have to say, as to the response to that situation at the minute."

He added: “It is nice to be associated with such a big club like that and it is a huge club. I am very proud of the fact that they have seen the good work we have done at the football club."

The Guardian Series was unable to confirm whether Orient had rejected the approach despite repeated calls to the club this afternoon.

However, they have since released a statement on their website. It reads: "On Friday morning we were contacted by a lawyer close to Cardiff City and Russell Slade, who asked us to give permission for Cardiff to talk to Russell. That evening Russell asked the club for permission to talk to Cardiff.

"On Saturday the general manager of Cardiff approached us in order to again ask permission to talk to Russell. In all cases, we denied Cardiff the permission and we did not authorise Russell to talk to Cardiff."
