The girls from Dartford’s Leigh Academy rugby league team turned in a superb performance to win the Champion Schools Year 10 title in Richmond on Friday.

They added the Year 10 crown to the Year 9 title they picked up 12 months previously with a comprehensive 48-12 victory over a strong Castleford team.
Castleford Academy went into the clash rated the best rugby league playing school in the country, featuring in six of this year’s eight finals.

But the only one of those they lost was against Leigh Academy and so it proved again as the Dartford side became the first school from London and the south east to feature in successive finals.

Winning consecutive titles is another landmark but Leigh didn’t just win, they dominated the Yorkshire outfit from start to finish.
Against a big physical side, Leigh Academy used their pace to great effect but also defended well and rarely made a mistake.

Isio Orogun took the player of the match award with a stunning hat-trick, opening the scoring within the first minute.

Leigh Academy director of sport Matteo Stamato said: “Words cannot describe what an achievement this is for the team, the school and rugby league in the south.

“It was achieved due to the girls’ relentless attitude to achieve perfection and commitment to training which allowed Leigh Academy archive a record breaking score of 48-12 against a formidable Castleford Academy who have a long and successful history in this competition.

“We have dreamt the dream, and now we are living the dream.

“This will forever be the greatest and proudest moment in my teaching career.”
