Harriers hold trials
CAMBRIDGE Harriers will be holding their annual trials for young athletes on May 7 at the Sutcliffe Park track.
The event is open to members and non-members alike and is also an opportunity for parents to meet club staff and coaches.
Starting at 6pm, a series of trials will be held in both track and field events and full details of the timetable can be found at cambridgeharriers.org.uk or by calling Mick Bond on 01322 552645.
Meanwhile, a slightly depleted Cambridge squad finished fourth overall at the latest meeting of the national junior league.
Best performances for the club came from Craig Lacy and Alisdair Macdonald in the javelin with respective throws of 48.14m and 38.63m to win both A & B strings.
Their efforts were watched by former world record holder Steve Backley.
Stefan Mitchell easily won the 100m in 11.6s, while Kate Laidlow triumphed in the 400m in 58.9s and gave two solid performances in both relays.
Jessica Clark ran encouragingly in the sprint hurdles in 16.4s and was only beaten as she over-strode the last couple of hurdles.
Andrew Sheridan opened his season with personal bests in 3,000m (9m19.2s) and 1,500m (4m20.5s), all in the space of just over an hour.
Sam Murphy also ran a personal best in the 1,500m (4m10.1s) for third in the A race.
Elsewhere, the women's team nearly got off to a winning start in their first match of the track season at Sutton Arena.
They led Aldershot, Belgrave and Dartford for most of the afternoon before succumbing to a late charge by Aldershot.
There were, however, a number of excellent performances which bodes well for the rest of the season
Xanine Powell made a welcome return to competition, winning the 100m in 12.4s and the shot putt with a throw of 9.24m.
Clare Elms was dominant in the middle distance events, winning the 800m and 3,000m as well as taking second spot in the 1,500m.
In the 800m she was well backed up by Caroline Ford, who opened her season with a time of 2m27.3s, while Ros Tabor backed Elms up in both the 3,000m and the 1,500m.
Tamara Ashaye picked up good points in the 400m hurdles with a gutsy 72.3s for second place and then later on ran well to take second in the B String 200m.
Kate Laidlow won the A string 200m in 26.0s, just 0.1s outside her personal best, and also won the B string 100m.
In the field, Helen Daniel threw more than 30m to win the A string discus and was ably backed up by Danielle Phillips, who won the B String with 21.65m.
Rachel Ummuna also won the A string long jump with a leap of 4.90m.
Final result: Aldershot 93, Cambridge Harriers 79, Dartford 75 and Belgrave 14.
