B&B trio collect silver
The Blackheath & Bromley trio landed silver
The Blackheath & Bromley trio landed silver

BLACKHEATH & Bromley Harriers athletes Jamie Atkinson and Peter Tucker continued their progress towards the London Marathon with a convincing first and second placing in the Thanet 20-mile race on Sunday.

The course, which took in the coastal stretch from Sandwich Bay to Broadstairs, took its toll on the runners as they had to run the return 10 miles with the wind in their faces.

For Atkinson, this was a long run to see how the stamina work has been going.

Running with his Harriers training partner, Tucker, both men were able to put coach Gordon Cooper's race instructions to the test, or so they thought.

But with several very steep hills in the course and the prevailing weather conditions, they decided to run together and settled into an average pace of 5.61mins a mile, slower than the coach's instructions.

This brought the pair home victorious with Atkinson winning in 1hr52m35s, five seconds ahead of Tucker.

The pair, along with Darryl Hilliar, also took silver medals as the second-placed men's team after being narrowly beaten by Medway & Maidstone.

Atkinson said: "This is my first 20-mile race and it has shown me Gordon Cooper's training is spot on. I am delighted to win here today and to take another Kent Championship medal at the same time."
