4:20pm Thursday 17th May 2012 in Athletics
A PAIR of pole vaulters from Bexley Athletics Club leapt to glory at the Kent championships on Sunday.
Charlie Jinks, 16, and 14-year-old Ailis McGovern won their individual titles, a double success which delighted Bexley AC coach Gordon Lillis.
Hurstmere School pupil Jinks jumped a personal best of 3.70m, moving up to 12th in the UK for his age group.
McGovern, who attends Chislehurst & Sidcup Grammar School, achieved 3.40m, 10cm off her personal best of 3.50m, where she is ranked first for U17 women.
The pole vault mad pair have also both experienced the Olympic stadium first hand.
McGovern collected a bronze there in the UK School Games, while Jinks was honoured to kit carry at the Olympic Test Event the previous weekend before.
Bexley had a tremendous day with 16 titles achieved, demonstrating the talent of their young athletes.
Jinks, a Bexley AC athlete since the age of 11, said: “We wouldn’t be here without Gordon.
“He devotes so much time to help us improve, so winning championships rewards him for all his commitment.
“It was a brilliant weekend for our team and shows our hard work is paying off.”
