ORPINGTON sprinter Dina Asher-Smith was left disappointed by this summer’s coverage of Team GB’s 4x100m women’s relay team after winning bronze in Moscow.

Going to the world championships with few expectations and achieving the bronze medal, Asher-Smith was left screaming and smiling ready to share her success with the media.

Instead, she was slightly annoyed what they had achieved was over shadowed by GB’s failure in the men’s relay race.

Great Britain’s men were disqualified from the 4x100m after Dwaine Chambers dropped the baton.

Asher-Smith, like many others, felt saddened by this disqualification but felt the girls deserved more attention within the media following their success.

“It was kind of sad for us,” the Blackheath & Bromley Harriers star admitted.

“We trained so hard and were doing so well.

“Why won’t you give us any of your air time?”

“I felt sorry for Dwaine Chambers but a big double page spread in the Daily Mail on Dwayne and nothing on the girls - we were like ‘uh?’ ”

Asher-Smith was a kit carrier at the London 2012 Olympics and was inspired when she found herself kit carrying on the most memorable day of the Olympics, Super Saturday, which involved three GB gold medals.

She recalled: “It was absolutely amazing, if you were British you could have burst into tears.

“It did inspire me.

“That little bit of happiness I got I want to give to somebody one day.

“Everyone wants an Olympic gold, but I just want to be an Olympian.

“Maybe that’s in 2016, 2020 in Tokyo or even 2022, but just being an Olympian is my ultimate goal.”

The promising youngster is now looking to complete the 200m in under 23 seconds, with her current best time being 23.63s.

It is going to take a lot of hard work and dedication to achieve, but Asher-Smith claims to be a little disappointed she hasn’t already achieved this time already.

“I could have done it this season if I had the right conditions and the right opportunities, but obviously regardless of ‘should of, would of, could of’ I didn’t do it.”
