AN ATHLETICS track which has bred world class champions including Adam Gemili and Dina Asher Smith looks to have a secure future after years of uncertainty.

Norman Park Track Management (NPTM) has been running the track in Norman Park for 20 years with athletes training there in that time including Steve Backley, Sally Gunnell, Jonathan Edwards and John Regis.

The track is home to the Bromley & Blackheath Harriers athletics club and during the track and field season is used for open meetings, league competitions, primary and secondary schools events, coaching sessions and bookings from a wide variety of organisations.

This success looked like it was going to come to an end when Bromley Council announced two years ago it was looking for a business partner to develop a multisport hub in the park.

Fears were raised at the time about how much a new company would charge for people to use the track.

But the multisport hub plan never took off and so NPTM was invited to bid for the contract to keep running the facility.

It has won the tender and now is working on the fine print of the contract with Bromley Council, which will see it running the track for the next 10 years.

Track manager Ken Daniel said: “They decided to go with us which is the right decision.

“We are an athletics track run by athletes and ex-athletes and we are known as being the best run facility in the country.

“We have had several world class athletes here over the years and when the athletics grand prix was at Crystal Palace lots of them used to train here.”
