Charlton caretaker boss Lee Bowyer is refusing to rule out management next season.

The former England international is in temporary charge until the end of the 2017/18 campaign.

He guided the Addicks into the top six after replacing Karl Robinson in March. Now, they face Shrewsbury in the play-off semi-final first leg tonight.

When asked if he’d like to stay in management, Bowyer, who has always been coy over his Charlton future, said: “Yeah, I don't see why not.

“We’ll see how things go here, I’m not saying ‘yeah’, but I wouldn't rule it out. I’ve enjoyed every minute of it apart from the times I’ve lost.

“I was grateful from day one. The challenge is to keep winning games - that has been the most important thing.

“I don't think I’ve done a bad job so far - these next two games will be the most important.”

Bowyer’s first taste of coaching came with Watford’s Under-21s team in 2015. He was a guest coach working under ex-Leeds team-mate Harry Kewell.

He was invited by Robinson to help Charlton’s midfielders last year before being appointed assistant manager in the summer.

It’s been a whirlwind 18 months for Bowyer, who could lead Charlton to the Championship at the end of the month.

He added: “It’s the tactical side of it - that’s the thing I’ve enjoyed the most [as a manager]. You watch other teams and think ‘how can I beat this team?’

“When you're an assistant, you watch the games and say what you think but at the end of the day, it’s the manager’s decision on how the team goes about it. So I wasn't in control and couldn't do it the way I wanted.

“That’s the thing that’s important for me and what I enjoy because it’s my say. If I fail, then I fail doing it my way. I said that from the beginning.

“I had no intention of going back into the game, but once I went with Harry, it gave me a taste of that winning feeling again. It’s gone crazy from there.”
