Joe Pigott hopes his former club Charlton win promotion to the Championship this season.

The 24-year-old, now at AFC Wimbledon, played in their 1-0 win over the Addicks on Tuesday. The result has left Lee Bowyer’s men in the play-off places on goal difference with five games to go.

Pigott, who began his professional career at the Valley in 2012, only has fond memories of his time in SE7 and is eager to see a revival.

The striker said: “It’s nice to see a few old faces. I’ve got great respect for the club [after] coming through there, and I’ve got quite a few people who did a lot for me that still work at the club. It was good to play against them.

“It’s got to be through the play-offs but last time I remember Nicky Bailey missing a penalty against Swindon.

“But I hope they do [win promotion], I’ve only got good memories of the club and most of the people I’m friends with want them to go up.

“Even my brother-in-law is a massive Charlton fan. He’s messaged me already saying how gutted he is that we won.

“They should never be in this league whatsoever, so to see them here and me playing against them is a bit of a shame but I’m sure they can push on.”

Charlton owner Roland Duchatelet remains in talks with two parties interested in buying the club.

Pigott was a Charlton player when Duchatelet took over in January 2014.

And he believes the Addicks will be a force in the Football League when the Belgian tycoon sells up.

The ex-Maidstone United star added: “My best friend’s a Charlton fan so they’ve sort of taken a step back over the last few years.

“I’m sure that if a new investor comes in, they will be straight back up there, along with a few thousand other people. So I just think it’s a matter of time, really.”
