Karl Robinson wants Rangers loanee Joe Dodoo to be patient for his Charlton chance.

Dodoo, 22, joined Charlton in a loan deal on transfer deadline day but has failed to make an impact at the Valley.

The striker has featured just five times from the bench, and has been an unused substitute for four successive games.

However, Robinson insists Dodoo will get an opportunity to impress, along with Dillon Phillips and Joe Aribo.

The Charlton boss decided not to use a third substitute when drawing with Oxford United on Tuesday.

And when asked why he didn’t turn to Dodoo again, Robinson told News Shopper: “Why don't you ask about Joe Aribo, Ezri Konsa or Dillon Phillips? There are other players who didn't come on, as well.

“It’s hard because you ask and I have to give you an honest answer. Just because I don't put someone on, it doesn't mean I don't like them. When I give people an honest answer, it reflects badly on the individual.

“Joe’s worked really hard, we had a meeting before the Oxford game, went through all his clips at Gillingham. We’ll sit down and watch his clips again - it’s about learning.

“It’s the same with Joe Aribo and Dillon Phillips. They have to learn and Joe will feel disappointed not getting on against Oxford but who does he come on for? Ricky Holmes? Josh Magennis?”

Robinson has used his three substitutes in six of Charlton’s 13 league games this term.

And he felt it was right to only make two changes during the Oxford clash with Billy Clarke and Karlan Ahearne-Grant coming on in the second-half.

The Liverpudlian added: “I said to Lee Bowyer and Johnnie Jackson, ‘what should I do?’ We felt we were on the front foot.

News Shopper: Football: Joe Dodoo plans to be at front of Rangers striker queue

Joe Dodoo's loan spell ends in January

“Sometimes from a media perspective and fans, they’ll go ‘he didn't make this sub’ but it’s just as brave not to make one because I leave myself open to the question, if we concede, ‘why didn't you make a change towards the end of the game?’

“But I don't always have to use them - you didn't used to have any subs. I brought players off when they looked fatigued.

“It’s just Joe [Dodoo], they have to be patient. Their chance will come. When? I can’t tell you that because it would be a lie.

“I don't know myself but it will come. They have to believe in their talent and they’ll be frustrated, as well.”
