Charlton boss Karl Robinson has defended Ben Amos after his shaky start.

Amos, who joined the Addicks on a season-long loan from Bolton last month, should have saved Jake Jervis’ second goal in the 2-0 defeat to Plymouth. But the striker’s long-range effort went straight through the former Manchester United goalkeeper.

Amos, 27, will be Charlton’s number one stopper this season, and Robinson is pleased with how his goalkeeper has settled in.

He said: “I’ve read a few things about the second goal, but it went through Solly’s legs. So, when things go through people’s legs, when your momentum is going one way, there’s only one way you can actually go and that’s to the bottom left of Ben.

“It was hit hard and low from 18 yards out, they are the shots goalkeepers don't like.

“Listen, the thing people need to realise, I’m asking Ben Amos to come out and claim everything. I want my goalkeeper to be aggressive.

“Ben Amos came out to claim corners, something we maybe haven't had in the past. But then, the problem with that is he might drop one or two and people only focus on the one.

“He’s working really hard, he’s not match fit yet because he didn't play any football in pre-season.”

Amos made just 17 appearances in an unsuccessful loan spell with Cardiff last season, and in the end, became their fourth-choice goalkeeper.

And in the previous campaign, he featured prominently in the Bolton side that suffered relegation to League One.

Despite two poor seasons, Robinson insists Amos is still playing with confidence.

He added: “He’s a confident lad with confidence in his own ability. People always forget he played in the team that kept Bolton up so he's done an awful lot for such a young man.

“He’s a very strong-minded character. We just need to get behind him, keep believing in him and he’ll make saves. He made a great save at home to Bristol Rovers, people forget that.”
