Karl Robinson says it would be “stupid” to put pressure on Dillon Phillips to be Charlton’s number one goalkeeper this season.

Phillips, 22, starred in the Addicks’ 2-1 Carabao Cup win over Exeter on Tuesday evening.

But he is playing second fiddle to Ben Amos, who joined the club on a season-long loan from Bolton two weeks ago.

And Robinson’s plan is to bring in another goalkeeper before the transfer window shuts to allow Phillips to gain some much-needed minutes under his belt.

The Charlton manager said: “I think with Dillon, it’s a really big club. To put so much pressure on a young player throughout the course of the next nine months is stupid.

“He’s young, he’s a goalkeeper and they don’t flourish until later. The intensity of being here is far greater than other clubs.

“If he wants to stay and fight for the number one spot, that’s fine, [but] I think he feels like he needs to play and develop and hone in on his abilities that way.

“He will be the number one at this club one day, one hundred per cent. But to put that burden on him now, I think it’s a big ask.”

Phillips’ only taste of regular first-team football came with Cheltenham in the 2015/16 campaign where he helped the club win promotion to League Two.

The Robins wanted Phillips to return on loan last season, but due to Charlton’s shortage of goalkeepers, he stayed in SE7.

Robinson added: “He knows he needs to go and learn. He wants to learn, and he doesn’t want to learn here and make mistakes that might affect the team that he loves.

“So, he wants to go and work hard and really hone in on his skills. He was disappointed with the goal he let in against Exeter.

“There are so many different pros and cons that we just know exactly what’s right for his development. He knows that as well.”
