Leyton Orient’s Gavin Massey hailed the impact Andy Edwards has had at the club since taking over from Alberto Cavasin last month.

The O’s picked up their first win under Edwards, who has been appointed until the end of the season, as Jay Simpson scored the only goal against Accrington Stanley on Saturday.

The result took Orient above Stanley in the league and Massey believes it provides evidence of the work being done by Edwards and his assistant Danny Webb.

“I think it has been different class. I think Andy and Webby are top coaches,” he explained.

“They have really implemented everything in what everyone needs to do. His first game against Doncaster was a bit harsh [to judge] as obviously the sacking happened before.

“They are very passionate about the club, you see that on the training pitch and you see that day in day out.

“I am really looking forward to working under them until the end of the season. Hopefully we can produce more performances like that and put more results together for them.”

After suffering a 3-1 defeat at Doncaster in his first game in charge, Edwards will hope Saturday’s victory can provide a springboard for the remainder of the season.

The win was all the better received as it was only Orient’s second at Brisbane Road in league Two this season and took them three points clear of the relegation zone.

Massey says Edwards’ coaching methods helped the O’s overcome Stanley and says the 45-year-old’s simple approach is benefitting the players.

“This sounds stupid but we are going back to basics really. At the end of the day we are in the position that we are, so you are not going to play football and beat teams that way,” he said.

“Sometimes it is going to be a scrap. You have to win the first and second ball and sometimes you have to play longer.

“We understand as a team that we need to start climbing the table, confidence grows and then start playing the football we did at the start of the season.”

The challenge now is for Orient to back up Saturday’s improved display with a positive result when they take on Wycombe Wanderers at Adams Park.

The Chairboys have taken 16 points from their last six league matches and are the division’s form side.

Taking anything from the match will therefore be seen as a plus for Orient and Massey is aware of the need to focus ahead of a testing match.

“We cannot get carried away with this win. Against Wycombe you will see the same performance and it will be back to basics,” Massey said.

“Three points is the only thing that matters. It doesn’t matter how you get them as long as you get them at the end of the day.

“Winning feels good but we have to work hard on the training pitch to get the win on Saturday.”
