Boothroyd issues rallying cry

Aidy Boothroyd has implored Watford fans to re-create the jumping atmosphere of two seasons ago and roar his side to victory over Hull City.

Watford entertain the Tigers in the first of a two-legged play-off on Sunday and the manager is pleading with supporters to turn Vicarage Road into a sea of yellow, producing the kind of white-hot atmosphere that inspired his side to a play-off triumph over Crystal Palace in 2006.

Boothroyd is aware that season-ticket holders have had precious little to cheer about this season - just five wins in the last 20 games at Vicarage Road - but believes his side are capable of signing off their home campaign in style.

"It's going to be a nice hot day, a great atmosphere and we need to make it a bright day and get all the yellow stuff out," said Boothroyd.

"What's gone on before has gone and we need to use everything to beat Hull. The crowd come into that. They were magnificent home and away against Palace in 2006 and we need to get Vicarage Road bouncing.

"Our home record is mediocre and we've got an opportunity to put on a performance, get a result and give our fans something to smile about."

Boothroyd is relishing the challenge of pitting his wits against Hull boss Phil Brown and is likely to be at his best with the tag of underdogs dangling around his faltering side's neck.

Watford go into the crunch game with just one win in their last 14 matches but the manager is confident his side can tear up the formbook and is likely to whip his troops up into a frenzy prior to kick-off.

"I am thoroughly looking forward to it," he said. "Because of our form we are the underdogs. That is not mind games - that's a fact. Hull are on a great run of form, they have a big squad, they have some quality players and they are favourites for this tie and Phil will know that.

"We have come a long way in a short space of time but we'll only enjoy the play-offs if we win it.

"We can draw on our experience from two years ago and will give it everything we have got. We want to come off the field having no regrets. That's what we did two years ago and we can do that again.

"It will be a pressure-cooker atmosphere but it's time for calm and making sure the club is fully focussed on what needs to be done."

Boothroyd is expected to use the 3-0 defeat at the KC Stadium as a source of motivation for Sunday in much the same way he did with the 3-1 league defeat against Palace in 2006.

"The defeat at the KC Stadium was up there with the worst performances," said the Watford boss.

"We were 2-0 down after 13 minutes and it was uphill from there. That game will be one of a few things I'll use. I know Hull well. I've seen them four or five times over the last couple of days. We will be prepared."

So will Hull who ambushed the Hornets seven weeks ago, giving Watford a taste of the medicine they had dished out to other sides during the first three months of the season.

"They started so brightly that day and we normally do that," recalled the manager. "We were still half asleep. We knew what was coming, we just didn't deal with it. We were totally caught out and it was a really bad day at the office."

Are we fans playing the game though?

No...ofcourse we can create a good atmosphere but it will be no good if the on pitch action once again is rubbish and we lose badly.

I have to say I really hope the boo boys stay away.

Yeah this year has not been great but we have to forget that now.

We need to make loads of noise and make it horrible for the Hull players. You can gaurentee they will do that to us on Wed.

We will all need to hold our nerve and stay with the boys even if thinsg are not going well.

We need to give it our all fans and players and not give any advantage to hull. Anything other than loads of singing and a great atmosphere will play right into Hull's hands

So please everyone time for post morterms about season is not for now. we are in the palyoffs and I want to get to Wembley.

So its time to hold your nerve get behind the boys and sing like mad come on lets all step up it and make the vic such a great atmosphere tomorrow.

really well said steve w, please peeps take it on board and get behind the lads
Posted by: gc on 10:04am Sat 10 May 08
funny thing is I thing the atmosphere will be great. But I am worried that if we create the atmosphere that we did 2 years ago( The best atmosphere at the vic in my 30 years)then it will actually work against our players, who clearly can not handle pressure.
So when it comes down to it.... now or never lads, you have to step up to the challenge.

Okay we will re-create the atmosphere of two seasons ago if you re-create the football of two seasons ago. Deal?
Posted by: jethro, elstree on 10:22am Sat 10 May 08
All this atmosphere chat is nonsense. We have been absolutely abysmal recently and for the last three games at home we have been unable to even score one goal. How can we be excited about Duke and Priskin upfront who have scored 4 goals betwen them this season? Over two legs against Hull we have no chance. This is so different to 2 years ago when I just knew we would win the play offs. The team of 2006 would have thrashed this one.

Exactly what I was thinking..

All very well us supporting the side like we should and I agree with Steve on his points but what if we find ourselves 2/3-0 down again?

Hull are too strong, too skillful, too potent up front, their defence is rock solid, indeed they have one of the meanest defences in the league. Christians this way to the lions. we will be slaughtered home and away and i for one wont waste any more money this season.Wembley...no chance

hornet jack ... I am pleased you wont be coming with that type of attitude, I agree with most on here that the football has been worse than mediocre, but now is not the time for negatives... As a football fan you should support your team through the good and the bad, and yes it is bad at the moment but lets remember we are not Man utd, Arsenal or chelsea ! we are Watford and I for one will always support this club, if you dont like it go and support one of the big clubs .... I know not everyone will agree with me but I know that the real football fans will understand !!!!!! uuuuu ornsssss .....

Good to hear you're staying in Leeds!
The negativity of some posters on here beggars belief. We know the football hasn't been great but we're in the playoffs and anything can happen. I'm sure Watford will raise their game. Steve W and Peter - good posts. It's easy to tell the true supporters on this site against people who just like a moan whatever league position we're in. A win and a suntan tomorrow!

What kind of a human doesn't get excited by their team being in the play-offs?

"hornet jack" you are either a total wind up merchant or should be utterly utterly ashamed of yourself
Posted by: The Rover, Watford on 12:13pm Sat 10 May 08
Enough of the negativity! If you are true Watford supporters then how about supporting the team. True, the last few month of results have been worse than bad, but the league is over now and we are in our cup final. Lets all show some support.
Posted by: mark, dunstable on 12:32pm Sat 10 May 08
Come on you orns!!!!!!!!

And sod off you boo boy prats if you cant even stay off the negative juice for the play offs!
It hasnt been pretty and i dont agree with a fair few of boothroyds decisions this year, but for gods sake, just support the team if you're going to turn up, or create another chat site for negative depressive people who dont want to go!
Cant wait for tomorrow, even Priskin up front tomorrow cant get me down - YOU ORNS!

Yorkshire people are too bone idle, too fat, too upfront, in their defence the puddings are nice, indeed they are the meanest (tight) arses in the country, their weather is normally sh1te.
You wont be wasting any of your money coz you aint got any.
All the teams have a chance, so EFF OFF!!

What a nice chap you are ... On the verge of a racist??? BNP member??

Hornetjack... dunno who he is... but there are people in Watford who are so pi@@ed off they wont' be there or so they say...so Yorkshire has nothing to do with it....
I shall be coming down from Leeds where I have been exiled for 18 years and will be 100% behind the Horns. I normally get to away games and actually prefer them to the negativity you get these days so often at the Vic and seemingly amongst several particularly nasty minded people on this WO message board

100% positive support tomorrow... no less!!
Posted by: VoR, watford on 2:31pm Sat 10 May 08
Dunno where you're coming from.....
You want 100% I give 1oo% your mate obviously doesn't, I'm getting sick and tired of all the negatives on here!
If Sunday is the same as when Scunny came down i'll have no qualms about smacking a few again in the rookery....

I agree with Steve W, come what may, whether it be a dire game or a brilliant game 180 minutes of unbridled support is needed from every horn at the matches, we at least can hold our heads up for the support even if the players falter, post mortems if required can be held after Wembley, what else is there to do during the summer, I for one who has called for a managerial change will put it on hold hopefully until after the outcome of the next 270 minutes of football, Please just go barmy for the horns and bounce us to the premiership.

Should be a decent atmosphere as it seems the jonny **** lately glory hunting boo boys have at last voted with there lardy arses as only 14,000 have been sold including the northern monkeys quota. Keep off the politics Yorkie or you will get slaughtered after you and your neighbours have stopped poncing from the south easts affluent tax payers that keep your wretched county afloat!x

Every time there is a Watford story on here why is there always so much negativity? All they're asking for is for the fans to back the team! If you haven't got anything positive to say, don't say anything and stay away from Vicarage Road if you hate is so much!
Posted by: tiger bay boy, mill end on 3:54pm Sat 10 May 08
who you chatting about James?
Posted by: frostie on 4:32pm Sat 10 May 08
Where do you get your figures from Tiger Bay, I hear there will be a lot more at the Vic than 14,000 but shame it is not a full house for a play off for the Prem.

I would rather have 14,000 real fans cheering the lads on anyway and leave the Zip-Colin prat type of so-called fans with their constant negativity at home with their prams.

Oh, nearly forgot. We are bound to win because Zip has predicted 2-0 and 3-0 defeats tomorrow in separate postings.

He is such a git, he never gets anything right, so here's to an underdogs win, just like Bristol at Palace today.

I reckon this hornetjack must be a WUM... not my mate.... any way starting the journey down this evening....and let's get 100% behind our team....

Its not gonna happen our home support is dire and an embarrassment we make no noise at all and this has been the case since the grounds been all-seater.Its not good enough having 500 fans in the rookery making some noise, we need to hear the rest of the crowd to get their vocal cords working.

We have people from all parts of the ground on this forum so how about a deal. When the ref blows the first whistle, EVERYBODY on here, no matter where you are, STAND UP and shout for all you are worth, COME ON YOU 'ORNS.
Stay on your feet for the game.
We are going up. Blind Faith.
Stand up if you love the 'Orns.

Well this it, time for everyone to show their true colours. I have been angry at times this season, especially after some of the dire home performances but come what may I will be cheering the golden boys on tomorrow regardless of how well we are playing or what the score is. We're all in this together.
Posted by: Ralph, Sofa on 9:09pm Sat 10 May 08
Tomorrow's the day, let's get behind the boys 100%. Bristol City hadn't won at Palace for 44 years before today so a home win is looking ominous! Cut the crap, moaning and booing and get behind the boys. Yellow Army, we are going up...

I'm well and truely suprised by the attitude by some of the people here.
Yes we have played badly for a while now and our form has resembled that of relegation strugglers lately.
But How does booing and moaning help?
The players have a bad game and they get booed of the pitch! How is that supporting your team? How is that encoureging them to strive to play their hearts out for the club.
Eliington has never been given a chance. He had been on the pitch for all of 5 minutes and people around me in the rookery where already critisising him!!!
If we win the play-offs, where will all of you boo-boys be? You will be in the rookery saying you knew we would do it all along!!!
I would happily bring back the days of second division football just to get rid of all you negative glory hunters that only come to Watford as you see it as your way to see Man U and Chelsea. If you boo-boys support and love Watford like you claim to, SHUT UP WITH YOUR MOANING AND DON A YELLOW SHIRT AND SHOW THE PLAYERS THAT WE BELIVE IN THEM.
