Swans must spend to survive

Les Cleevely has fired a parting warning shot at Walton & Hersham, claiming that without investment, the club is unlikely to push for promotion anytime soon.

The Swans completed their Ryman Division One South campaign with a 3-0 defeat to champions Dover Athletic and Cleevely, who quit to concentrate on his commitments with Chelsea and his goalkeeping school, predicts a less-than-bright future ahead.

He said: "There are some big hitters in this league.

"When you look at the likes of Kingstonian, they are proper football clubs in terms of crowds and facilities.

"You could try to attract a player here but, with all due respect, Walton & Hersham is a tip.

"It is not the chairman's fault - the club needs a new ground, and that has been rumbling on for some time."

Cleevely was still upbeat about the Swans' efforts at the weekend, despite the scoreline.

He added: "I thought we did well, to be honest.

"We put all the academy youngsters in and I felt they played very well.

"I was proud of how they coped.

"It was a big ask to play the champions and it really just came down to them finishing better than us."

Cleevely will still be involved in the coming weeks, having been asked to oversee his successor's recruitment.

And he offered hope for whoever steps into his shoes at Stompond Lane.

He added: "I think realistically the club simply needs to stabilise and stay put.

"The academy system works and there are trials ongoing to keep the flow of talent coming through."

Hi

I was a Swans supporter back in the good old days of the 1940's and early 1950's

Can you send me some details on the the team of those days. Liday was the goal

keeper, Herbert was captain ,stevens was fullback plus Nakerville, think that was the spelling .Cannot remember the rest. Theyt were a very good side and took the Swans into the Athenian league,if I am correct

Regardsd
