'UNACCEPTABLE' was how Wanderers chief Gareth Ainsworth branded his side's second half performance as Blues' season took another backward step.

A win at Newport County on Saturday could have gone a long way to helping secure Wanderers' place in the Football League for another season.

Instead former Blue Chris Zebroski was among the scorers as Wycombe were beaten 2-0 - and with Northampton picking up a crucial victory, only goal difference is now keeping Ainsworth's men out of the relegation zone.

It's not quite winner takes all yet, but Wanderers know there's no margin for error with the Cobblers arriving at Adams Park on Good Friday.

And equally Ainsworth knows his side need to improve from the weekend's defeat at Rodney Parade, in a match he described as terrible.

The Blues boss said: "Today was unacceptable in the second half.

"I didn’t like the nerves I saw out there today, and the second half performance was just unrecognisable from Dagenham.

"I felt we were outfought, out-thought and outplayed."

And Ainsworth said some of his players are fighting for their careers - whether that's at Adams Park next season or elsewhere.

He said: "There’s a lot of work to do this week and we’ve got a massive game this week, not just for Wycombe but for their careers as well.

"The players have got to stand up and be counted because this club has to stay in the Football League, there’s no two ways about it.

"All my career I’ve been a fighter and I’ve stood up to the challenge but I don’t think we did that today."
