Haylock: De Angelis good enough for the Championship
HAYES and Yeading United manager Garry Haylock is convinced new Italian goalkeeper Alessio De Angelis can grace the Championship.
The 22-year-old former Lazio shot stopper made his debut in the 2-2 draw at home to Dorchester on Saturday.
And Haylock insists De Angelis has the ability to play near the top of the English domestic game if he impresses at United.
Haylock said: "We weren't looking for a goalkeeper but this was just too good an opportunity to turn down. Clubs are already looking at him and within a couple of years he could be a Championship player. I would expect teams at a higher level to come in for him.
"He has great feet, is a good shot stopper and very brave. In training last week he made a save where everyone just stopped and clapped. He is very good and just needs to adapt to the English game."
United are still searching for their first win of the calendar year after twice letting a lead slip against the Blue Square South strugglers.
Haylock added: "We had some great chances but we didn't take them and so it was very disappointing. In the first half we were very good. We didn't take our chances so could have lost the game in the end.
"They (Dorchester) were decent and although they are a very young side they didn't look disillusioned despite being in their league position."
The United boss is confident he will be able to bring in a new defender before their trip to Cambridge City at the weekend but is delighted to have secured the immediate future of his key players in Will Hendry, Steve Perkins and Danny Allen-Page.
Haylock said: "The most consistent performers have signed new contracts which is important because this is a long term project and we need to be aiming for league football within five years."
