Dean Cox could not hide his disbelief after his wonder goal at Walsall from inside his own half.

The winger left the Saddlers shell shocked after he struck an astonishing 60-yard strike which flew into the net. His sensational shot helped the O’s to the 2-1 victory at the Banks’s Stadium and seems certain to take the goal of the season honour.

The 25-year-old said: “I still can’t believe it to be honest. Anthony Griffith got smashed on the halfway line and they stopped so I was able to look up and have a touch. The keeper wasn’t off his line much but I thought I’d have a go and it’s ended up in the top corner which was great.

“I think maybe they thought the ref was going to give a foul but he played advantage and I’m obviously thankful for that and it was a lovely feeling when it went in.

“I can’t say I’ve ever scored anything like that before. I hope the fans don’t get carried away because I don’t think there will be many more of them but it was great and I’m delighted.”

Cox continued: “It’s always good to get up and running with a goal and especially in such a way. Any goal is a good goal for me so I’m not going to get carried away with a halfway line strike.

“We’ve done very well and want to keep that going. The gaffer’s instilled in us that he wants us to keep going and see where it takes us.”

The O’s were in exceptional form during the first half as they led 2-0 and could have scored two more, including an unusual header from Cox which was saved by Karl Darlow.

It was a different story in the second half but Orient showed their gritty side as they held on to their lead.

Cox said: “I’d say that was the best we’ve played this season in terms of creating chances and we looked really strong at the back as well.

“That’s where we’ve really improved and the boys at the back were fantastic and allowed the front boys to get on the ball and express ourselves.”

The victory will send Orient into this weekend’s home game with Sheffield United in great heart and the former Brighton & Hove Albion attacker hopes Tuesday’s win is the start of another unbeaten run.

Cox said: “Confidence is great at the moment. Mine is now definitely, I'm going to shoot from everywhere now!

“Winning games breeds confidence. Hopefully we can take that sort of confidence into Saturday against Sheffield United. There will be a great atmosphere and I’m sure they’ll bring a few.

“Our fans have been fantastic this season. They’ve stuck by us and hopefully we’re repaying them back with the unbeaten run hopefully we’re going to start another one so we need to keep it going and take the club forward.

“I would say Sheffield United are one of the teams to beat. Along with Doncaster that will be a very hard task but we’re at home and we’ve got the confidence from the win and hopefully we can keep it going.”
