Nathan Clarke admits the players are on fire in training and confidence is soaring after Leyton Orient extended their unbeaten run to four games.

The O’s captain has helped his new club to ten points, with three wins and a draw, in the last fortnight and he insists everyone in the squad is excited about what they can achieve this season.

Clarke said: “It’s unbelievable. Training’s different class at the moment and everyone’s on fire. We want to take that into games and we should be a match for anybody in this league with the players and the squad we’ve got. We’ve got a really good group here and we’re really positive about the season.

“As a footballer you want the games to come thick and fast and there are a good chunk of matches coming up.

“We want to be going in there with confidence and the run we’ve been on and the strikers getting on the end of crosses and scoring goals has given us the confidence that will really push this team forward.”

Orient’s form has undoubtedly been helped by a solidity at the back with the powerful centre-half forming a resolute partnership alongside Ben Chorley.

The O’s have only conceded twice in their last four games and much of this could also be attributed to the displays of young goalkeeper Ryan Allsop. Clarke insists he has not been surprised by the performances of the talented 20-year-old who is picking up the plaudits on a weekly basis.

The former Huddersfield Town defender said: “I’ve not been surprised by his [Allsop] performances. He’s a big guy and wants to be coming in and playing as much as he can.

“Unfortunately he sat on the bench for the first couple of games but when he’s been asked to do a job then he’s come in and done that superbly. His kicking is unbelievable and the confidence he’s getting game after game can only help us and himself.

“When players come from higher teams they come down to get the experience. The longer he’s in there doing well, coming for crosses and keeping clean sheets, it just gives him the confidence and he’s doing great for us.”

Reflecting on the O’s improved defensive record, Clarke added: “That’s something we need to build on as a team. It’s not just about the keeper and the back four. As a team we’re working tremendously hard on stopping teams from playing and it just helps the back lads and we can get organised a lot quicker. It’s a starting point for us to go on and win games.”

Orient suffered a disappointing 2011/12 campaign where they were struggling to avoid the drop for much of the season, but there is renewed optimism this time around.

Clarke did not experience their plight last year but he believes the supporters deserve some success and is confident the current crop of players are equipped to deliver it.

The 29-year-old said: “We’re looking to push on. After the disappointment of last season the fans really deserve something special here.

“We believe we’re a good enough squad. If you look at the names here it’s a great squad and we’re willing to take on anybody. Going as high as we can be is everybody's aim.”

Orient’s next game is at home to Doncaster Rovers on Saturday afternoon. The visitors have made plenty of changes to their squad after being relegated from the Championship and Clarke hopes they can take advantage of an extended rest this week, with Rovers involved in the Capital One Cup yesterday.

The skipper said: “They’re [Doncaster] quite a new team which have been put together. It will be a tough game but we’re at home and we want to make that a fortress. The past few games we’ve certainly done that.

“They’ve got a game on at Norwich so that will help us. We’ve got a week to prepare and make sure everything’s spot on for Saturday.”
