Watford head coach Gianfranco Zola expresses sympathy for sacked Sean Dyche

Zola's sympathy for Dyche Zola's sympathy for Dyche

Gianfranco Zola says he has sympathy for Sean Dyche and believes he will have to win over sections of the Watford faithful following his predecessor’s sacking.

Dyche enjoyed a successful debut season in management after guiding Watford to 11th place in the Championship.

The former centre half had been a player, coach, assistant and manager of the Hornets during the last decade and his sacking surprised many in football.

This is Zola’s second job in management and after being dismissed by West Ham United himself in 2010, the former Italy international says he knows how Dyche feels.

Zola told the Watford Observer: “Of course I have sympathy for him. You never like it when somebody loses their job; I have lost a job and I know how it feels.

“It is a difficult situation and a strange situation because he did a very good job but the new owners have come in and they are trying to put their own people in place.

“I don’t think it was anything to do with Sean and the job he has done, it is just the way it is and it happens everywhere. When people come in they often want their own people.”

Zola has not spoken to Dyche but stated he does have admiration for the man he replaced.

The Chelsea legend was asked whether he believes he needs to win over the supporters, following Dyche’s departure, at Tuesday night’s press conference. He replied: “Yes of course. I know he did very well and to him goes my respect and my admiration.

“He did a very good job so for me the task will be difficult but it has always been like that for me.

“I have had challenges since I started playing football and I was half of the size of the others. They said I wouldn’t stand a chance of becoming a footballer and I took that challenge.

“Now I have another difficult challenge and I told the players, I will give everything I have inside to help them to be maybe a little bit better and we will see how the results go.”

There will be more comments from Zola and chief executive Scott Duxbury uploaded to the website during the course of the week and also in Friday's Watford Observer.

Opinion is so divided about SD, but if you invest the sort of money the new owners have ..and will, they have to be free to run the club as they see it.
SD did a much better job than most of us ..including me, expected and I am sure he has all of our gratitude.
I also think for GZ to talk straight and honestly about his predecessor is refreshing, and points to what sort of guy he is.

Strange for a manager to say this sort of thing regarding the last coach, but with the circumstances perhaps GZ thought it necessary.

Agree with Cogg's comments but for Zola to say he knows how Sean feels is utter rubbish.
Zola was sacked for failure, Sean perhaps was sacked for not being in the team that brought WFC to the Pozzos despite his success.
I am sure Zola will get our support but failure will be jumped on and equally if the Pozzos are as good as they are cracked up to be, will Duxbury, Zola and Nani survive. the three new boys records to date in football club management has yet to inspire confidence.
As for Zola choosing to make these comments an early bit of PR could be useful in getting fans onside.

Time to move on from the SD era now and Zola did the right thing to make these comments when he did.

SD knows how we all feel about him and that he can move on with his head held high but now, come on Watford fans, it's OUR new era so let's all get behind the new team and move on. COYH's

Come on, you can't seriously join the hammers in their search for scape goats ..... These three are not responsible for the bank crash. Their ambitious bank owning owners had pulled out all the stops in the hunt for Champions League and got caught with their trousers down.

Duxbury broke some football rules for sure but commited no offence but it is academic, they were already a sinking ship.

And Zola's hands were completely tied and he is totally blameless.

A sensible and pragmatic comment.

Just as new owners wish to install those they know and feel comfortable with, so too do many managers, who take their coaching staff with them when they move.

So welcome to Watford Gianfranco. Onwards and upwards! COYH!

It should be no different to any other walk of life.

If I bought a business it has to be run how id want it to be run. And if you have a senior manager in mind to fullfill a certain catergory then you bring them in. You dont take what you are left behind by the previous regime !!

If SD's contract is paid up I don't think he will suffer any hardship, and without dought he will secure another post in no time. I'm sure we will follow his carreer as we do with all ex hornets..Now lets get to it !!!

I cant see why any fans should dislike Zola because SD was sacked, it wasnt his decision and if GZ had turned down the job on the basis that SD was in place the Pozzo's would have turned to someone else and SD would still have been sacked.

SD just didnt figure in their plan. I hope he has been fairly treated in terms of pay offs, no reason why not and do hope that he gets a chance elsewhere

I for one think Sean did an incredible job for our club under extreme pressure. But in fairness its the owners choice of his management team he is paying for..As for Gianfranco hunting for admirers i doubt very much, if that was his intention in wishing Sean well. I firmly have good vibes about our new set up.I only hope that we give our new structure a fair time for it to be implemented..And in honesty we are a long way off having a squad that would have any chance in the premiership, maybe A.M being our only premier player. And Gianfranco has made it clear he wants to hold on to him....

Agreed. Already Zolas being castigated for expressing sympathy for his predecessor, and how was a 9th finish and 4th from bottom ( after massive interference from above)?
I'm getting sick of these poor Sean comments and need to get real on this, if SD had been offered more money at a bigger club he'd of done the Frank Brough.
The only people loyal to their clubs are the fans, and it's always been that way.

It was mean to read how can a 9th and 4th from bottom blardy blah be deemed a failure? Before no wheels comes steaming in

Zola has respect for other people within football so just showing this now but in reality the new owners can do what they like.
