Watford confirm takeover talks with the Pozzo family are 'progressing nicely'
8:40pm Friday 22nd June 2012 in Latest Football News
By Frank Smith, Deputy Group Sports Editor
The Hornets have released a statement confirming takeover talks with the Pozzo family are “progressing nicely” despite claims the deal was off earlier this afternoon owner by Laurence Bassini.
The Hornets owner rang the Watford Observer this afternoon to state the deal was “definitely off “.
However, sources subsequently told us that was not the case and that talks were “going well”.
And Watford have now released a statement confirming that is the case.
It read: “Despite recent remarks, the deal for the sale of Watford FC to the Pozzo family is progressing nicely.
“There is no issue with funds and both parties are hoping to conclude shortly.”

The quicker we can sign the better and at least this shows you who is really in charge of the club and it's not Bas.

It is clear Mr Bassini/Bazini has lost control of the club. His 'this is my ticket to millions' has failed. It is clear he defaulted on the bonds so only released 2 directors from the 1 company he could. The issue with the safe now becomes clear. He had already lost control and the police were only called to prevent a breach of the peace. My understanding is he still did not get access to the safe.
The takeover will happen as soon as possible but Mr. Bassini is no longer part of it and has lost any credibility that, to most of us, he never had anyway.
The Watford board and Pozzo's joint statement should calm us all. I, for one, walked away from the club when Bassini took over and hope you will welcome back a supporter of 35 years standing that saw through the sham that would make a great episode of hustle.
Go away Mr. Bassini, there's no business anyone will do with you ever again. Funny how you start talking to the press when the game is up

I still, despite living 14,000 miles away turned up to 2 games last year. I didn't communicate my point correctly and accept your comments and, in fact, agree to an extent. None of us can ever bury the fact we're Watford fans but we can lose our faith in the club. Generally reading posts on here will do that. After all I'm also a Sarries season ticket holder and the opportunity to turn Vicarage Road into a centre of sporting excellence has been missed sadly.

Was a non payment of bond money and late wages enough to trigger a clause to kick him out ? I can see Homer and Ashcroft not having such a clause to protect themselves, the instruction not to release safe keys must have come from high up. The only bright spot is that we did have a very reasonable season, lets hope that SD is at least given the chance to continue on last seasons great ending.

Kevin Affleck was correct in the going Ons, I also think GTs departure was his reaction to The way things were going in the club, the very fact people's wages were late would not sit well with such a person with his integrity.
As for further sales, I'm not sure Bas had access to all the finances such is the complicated way the three companies were made up.

I just hope LB see's some sense and just helps the sale go through! I cannot see it working if he stays now... If he goes now he can leave knowing the club is in a better state then when he took over, if he stays it looks like potential administration to me.... Fingers crossed for some positive news on monday even tho I am not sure I can take another day of tension and waiting around ..

Let us be patient. A take over takes time. All aspects of the Club have to be taken into account. Baz's history is not great. That came out in the takeover proposal document. If I remeber correctly it was not endorsed by the Directors. He has done some good things ie saved the Club from administration, and got the pitch relaid and (I think) gave support to SD, but along the way has upset Directors, staff and supporters. I am sure this is well known to the Pozzo's who have done, or are still doing their homework. They will want to make sure that there are no skeletons in any safe or cupboard. Meantime fingers crossed and hope it all comes to a satisfactory conclusion, and Bazs tenure can be cinsigned to history. The future looks bright, the future looks yellow (and red).

His "deal is off" statement was obviously a last gasp attempt to stop the real owners from relinquishing control. Fortunately without his own cash and a handful of specialist lawyers he really didn't have a chance.
This does beg the question who it really was spending large sums on improving the infrastructure at the club? My guess is the Pozzo's themselves or maybe SEJ has stepped in to rescue the club anonymously.
One thing I won't do is credit our rescue to Bassini. "Potless and phoney" is how he's been described by Senior Watford officials apparently and who am I to disagree?

What I will say we are all Watford fans, and most of us have seen dire, average, good and great times, tell you what the great times were the best, and that's what I want for my club
I will attempt to spell the situation as I see it, out as simply as I can one more time for you. With his well hidden business pedigree, regular changes of identity, lack of transparency over the source of his funding, bizarre take-over vehicle etc, many people felt uneasy about Baz from day one.
His increasingly eccentric behaviour since - namely his spat with GT and subsequent threats, failure to attend fans forums with lame (literally and metaphorically) excuses, late payment of wages to staff, rumours of non payment to contractors, a bust up with workers over keys to the company safe, an undignified clash with Sordell's agent, the whiff of an HMRC investigation etc etc etc - has only added to the suspicion that this man is some way short of being a 'fit and proper' person to own a football club.
I am amazed that anyone cannot see or accept that despite Baz's 'achievements' - an upgraded pitch, a refurbished pub, some new wire for the tannoy system - that something appears very obviously wrong at Watford FC.
Just how wrong things are remains to be seen but will no
doubt become clear in due course.
Of course, the anti-Baz brigade may be proved wrong and history may judge him as the saviour of Watford FC and the finest owner the club has ever had. Somehow I doubt it though.

We were on the verge of going under and he was the only option we had at that time....

Alex Hillcroft wrote:Sorry Alex but if that is a reason to hate the guy from day one by you and others, it is pretty weak. Yes he is strange in his approach and PR is not great but his past is his past and has nothing to do with his tenure at Watford, just like your past is your past so that is not an example, how many other club owners were bankrupt before, Alan Sugar, Simon Jordan, Ken Bates to name a few but that did not stop them doing great things for their clubs (most of the time)also looking at some of the biggest and richest men in industry also went through bankruptcy before Richard Branson is a prime example so sorry this is no reason to hate the guy, because despite his name changes and desire to be private he stopped the club going into administration full stop and was the only offer on the table for us to continue. Your answer to other eccentric behaviour is correct but it is also what we in the trade will call narrow mindless to the full picture, he was ill so could not attend the forum that my friend is fair reason whether you like it or not you cannot state what his level of pain, discomfort etc was to opt out.Re your list of achievements I think it is all well saying he got some new wire for a tannoy system but that wire et all cost 850k for the complete system, also you do not mention the investment into the team with signings and loanees including some high profile and expensive loanees and also appeasing the fans by putting his money into buying player when possible, supporting the managers needs and helping through that to achieve a great top half table finish when avoiding relegation was the main requirement from the fans, those 'achievements were more than the previous 3 regimes achievements in a like for like so why can't he be recognised for that fact? He is now being forced by the bondholders to sell the club so hopefully this progresses, he is obviously unhappy to do this but either needs to raise over 9.5 million or sell, taking into account bondholders dues and club running costs needed to continue. Re HMRC there is nothing to talk about at present and as you correctly point out in due course we will be wiser to the ins and outs of the money at the next publishing of accounts, but in fairness we have always wondered were our club owners have put the money made from transfers, at least with Bassini he has made visible efforts with it in the pub, pitch, players, equipment in one season. I thank you for actually attempting to answer why he is hates by some but as you see above he has not really merited that response and has done more good than harm!

He was the chosen one by the Board, who were nominally headed up by GT with Fransen and Timperley. Guided by advisers and the Good Lord.
Can they have got it so wrong or is Bas's latest outburst aimed at pushing the Pozzo's into a higher gear. if it was it appears to have worked and for WFC that has to be good.
If ownership and or control had changed we could perhaps have expected an announcement. No such announcement has been made.
As I have stated many time the quality of WFC admin under J Winter and before that Boy Blunder appears from the cash flow crisis appears abysmal and is matched by the crazy assumptions and assertions of many of the contributors.
There are many things wrong at WFC and it needs a good sort out, the airing of dirty washing leaves a nasty taste and hopefully under new football orientated management we may see a culling of both staff and directors, I trust that Sean who has done a good job will survive but it is time for many of the staff as well as the owner to leave.
As for Ashley Young, the forwards and midfielders suffice it to say they have played better.
