Watford confirm takeover talks with the Pozzo family are 'progressing nicely'

The Hornets have released a statement confirming takeover talks with the Pozzo family are “progressing nicely” despite claims the deal was off earlier this afternoon owner by Laurence Bassini.

The Hornets owner rang the Watford Observer this afternoon to state the deal was “definitely off “.

However, sources subsequently told us that was not the case and that talks were “going well”.

And Watford have now released a statement confirming that is the case.

It read: “Despite recent remarks, the deal for the sale of Watford FC to the Pozzo family is progressing nicely.

“There is no issue with funds and both parties are hoping to conclude shortly.”

Let's keep everything crossed. So far the Italians have an agreement in principle with a man who has none.

The quicker we can sign the better and at least this shows you who is really in charge of the club and it's not Bas.

I am going to try to explain the situation but it does contain certain assumptions.

It is clear Mr Bassini/Bazini has lost control of the club. His 'this is my ticket to millions' has failed. It is clear he defaulted on the bonds so only released 2 directors from the 1 company he could. The issue with the safe now becomes clear. He had already lost control and the police were only called to prevent a breach of the peace. My understanding is he still did not get access to the safe.

The takeover will happen as soon as possible but Mr. Bassini is no longer part of it and has lost any credibility that, to most of us, he never had anyway.

The Watford board and Pozzo's joint statement should calm us all. I, for one, walked away from the club when Bassini took over and hope you will welcome back a supporter of 35 years standing that saw through the sham that would make a great episode of hustle.

Go away Mr. Bassini, there's no business anyone will do with you ever again. Funny how you start talking to the press when the game is up

I still, despite living 14,000 miles away turned up to 2 games last year. I didn't communicate my point correctly and accept your comments and, in fact, agree to an extent. None of us can ever bury the fact we're Watford fans but we can lose our faith in the club. Generally reading posts on here will do that. After all I'm also a Sarries season ticket holder and the opportunity to turn Vicarage Road into a centre of sporting excellence has been missed sadly.

My point is more that, when money can only stretch so far, why would we spend it at Vicarage Road when a blatant con man is in charge.

This is a fairly good assumption I think and would certainly seem to clear up a few strange happenings and sudden statements from Mr B.

Was a non payment of bond money and late wages enough to trigger a clause to kick him out ? I can see Homer and Ashcroft not having such a clause to protect themselves, the instruction not to release safe keys must have come from high up. The only bright spot is that we did have a very reasonable season, lets hope that SD is at least given the chance to continue on last seasons great ending.

I have never met Bas and I never will probably. I do think that he left the club in a more stable state than when he came, however it seems just how stable that really is right now is in itself in question. I genuinely thank him for what good he has done, and he has done some good things, however can I honestly trust him as a man? No. I genuinely believe that he is actually quite a sad and probably lonely man, he wants attention and like any child, attention, good or bad is still attention. Going to the media today and saying that the deal is off (remembering how he avoids the media when it suits) was a very strange action and to some could border psychologically on the total and utter craving for attention. It does to me. So, I hope the deal goes through, SD stays as he certainly deserves to and that we move onto another new and exciting phase as fans of our beloved Watford Football Club - and Mr Bas, good luck and thanks, time for all parties to move on.

Thank you Jason, very informative. I was worrying that beginning of the season would be an embarrassing nightmare without a proper pitch. It's embarrassing enough having such a psycho owner. What a loser than poor excuse of a man is. Good riddance Bankrupt Bas. Off to your next pathetic attempt to run a business using other peoples money. Doomed to total failure and ridicule, as usual.

Right ... still think he saved the club, but has completely lost it ..
The prospect of having 'Real' football people as owners is the way to go.

I think a lot will come out in the wash.
Kevin Affleck was correct in the going Ons, I also think GTs departure was his reaction to The way things were going in the club, the very fact people's wages were late would not sit well with such a person with his integrity.
As for further sales, I'm not sure Bas had access to all the finances such is the complicated way the three companies were made up.

If I remeber correctly it was not endorsed by the Directors. He has done some good things ie saved the Club from administration, and got the pitch relaid and (I think) gave support to SD, but along the way has upset Directors, staff and supporters. I am sure this is well known to the Pozzo's who have done, or are still doing their homework. They will want to make sure that there are no skeletons in any safe or cupboard. Is that right? Is more than 50% of the playing surface going to be synthetic? Has the Football League and FA been told that (i thought synthetic pitches were not permitted in Prem/Championship. OR do you mean once the grass is sown, they weave nylon below the surface to consolidate the grass roots? The actual surface is actually 100% real growing grass.

Listen a lot of you know I am a fan of what Bassini has achieved in his 15 months tenure at Watford and still stand by this as action speaks louder than words. But I know that he has limited funds (always did) and is in a situation whereby he either has to raise 7.5million to pay off the bondholders or face default. Thus the selling of the club has been put as best option/solution to he issue. I as the majority are not happy to read that Bassini has tried to either scupper the takeover or delay it to try and buy time to raise funds, thus the report the deal was off! The bondholders are clearly trying to pursade him he has limited choice and the buy out is the best for him and especially for the club. I hope the man accepts this and does not turn all his good work into a farce with money grabbing demands and unproffesional comments. It's without doubt that money came in from outside the club and despite LB's claims that it was his, I think you can be certain it wasn't.

His "deal is off" statement was obviously a last gasp attempt to stop the real owners from relinquishing control. Fortunately without his own cash and a handful of specialist lawyers he really didn't have a chance.

This does beg the question who it really was spending large sums on improving the infrastructure at the club? My guess is the Pozzo's themselves or maybe SEJ has stepped in to rescue the club anonymously.

One thing I won't do is credit our rescue to Bassini. "Potless and phoney" is how he's been described by Senior Watford officials apparently and who am I to disagree?

His "deal is off" statement was obviously a last gasp attempt to stop the real owners from relinquishing control. Fortunately without his own cash and a handful of specialist lawyers he really didn't have a chance.

This does beg the question who it really was spending large sums on improving the infrastructure at the club? My guess is the Pozzo's themselves or maybe SEJ has stepped in to rescue the club anonymously.

One thing I won't do is credit our rescue to Bassini. "Potless and phoney" is how he's been described by Senior Watford officials apparently and who am I to disagree?
Very True Bringe,
He has not put 1penny into the club(including purchase). These idiots who think he saved the club and got it back on steady ground are deluded clappers.
We can all spend other peoples money.
It's ok though, Bas can go back to one of his many companies he runs(just dont ask him or companies house what they are called)

Yawn blah blah blah. Bassini brought the club he had to pay 440k to start the process from his own money, before he could even enter the door as owner as well as pay legal fees, company registration, delisting fees another 150k, legal documentation etc. etc. how does that equal your usual stupid statement he has not spent a penny! You just continue spewing out drivel without a clue, it should be better suited if it is actually RIP Bankrupt, go aspew your cra p elsewhere our getting very boring with your same ol same ol untruths.

Correct. 14 months ago we were worried about 2 things, administration and/or subsequent relegation. He successfully kept us away from both. He has been good for the club but now is the time to go, or the preachings of Bucklers doom merchants may come true.

Corbin, I think there a good few people on here that try to make out they are 'in the know' when quite clearly they are not and alot of criticism is speculation. But to someone who is not 'in the know' where Bas has let himself down is his outbursts during his tenure that you don't expect from an owner of a Football club, not in public anyway. But I am sure when all this has been said and done someone will lift the lid on things and many of us will be able to make more of a judgement over the last 15 months or so.

Does the phrase, 'when you're in a hole stop digging' mean anything to you?

I will attempt to spell the situation as I see it, out as simply as I can one more time for you. With his well hidden business pedigree, regular changes of identity, lack of transparency over the source of his funding, bizarre take-over vehicle etc, many people felt uneasy about Baz from day one.

His increasingly eccentric behaviour since - namely his spat with GT and subsequent threats, failure to attend fans forums with lame (literally and metaphorically) excuses, late payment of wages to staff, rumours of non payment to contractors, a bust up with workers over keys to the company safe, an undignified clash with Sordell's agent, the whiff of an HMRC investigation etc etc etc - has only added to the suspicion that this man is some way short of being a 'fit and proper' person to own a football club.

I am amazed that anyone cannot see or accept that despite Baz's 'achievements' - an upgraded pitch, a refurbished pub, some new wire for the tannoy system - that something appears very obviously wrong at Watford FC.

Just how wrong things are remains to be seen but will no
doubt become clear in due course.

Of course, the anti-Baz brigade may be proved wrong and history may judge him as the saviour of Watford FC and the finest owner the club has ever had. Somehow I doubt it though.

What have I got to apologise for Keith Mercer ?
I think perhaps you want to think back to my previous posts as I have never ever said LB was the answer!!!! I always said he made me nervous... The only difference between me and you is that I believe the negativity and drivel spouted on this site doesn't help the team or club in general !! The bloke has come to the end of his time and is quite obviously unstable but can anyone honestly say if he leaves tomorrow that he was worse than the previous regime? We were on the verge of going under and he was the only option we had at that time....
Now all I have to say after the England result tonight is lets just stick together as fans of WFC and hope for some good news from the Pozzos takeover tomorrow.. I just hope you give them more of a chance to get it right than you gave LB!!

Yes the eyes are fine, the hay fever treatment sorted that out.
Sorry my pugnacious good looks weren't easy on the eye, but I'm sure they improved as you looked up from the floor.
Anyway onto more important stuff, let's hope things progress nicely, and Bas is kept nice and safe in restraints and a padded cell, till its all over.
Wasn't England grim? Completely outplayed. Young should have come off, and taking Welbeck off? Madness

Hope this makes it clear to my detractors on my position to all this and no I have not gone into hiding Bankrupt, Buckler and Lutondown, still clapping still want he best for WFC!
I think Corby, that you are very entitled to your opinion, but yours is very much the minority. So be it. I also think you were right on Dyche, something I admitted publicly that I was very wrong.
What you did last week was breach my confidentiality by naming me. Not that I care, I'm confident to answer anybody anywhere. But I think your intent was less than noble. Dave!
Now back to the issue, Bas acted like someone selling their car to one of the big company's that advertise, who promise to pay money into your bank account before taking your car away.
I'm no on these matters, but surely no businesspeople would pay £12m into any bank account knowing there's £7m (odd) outstanding on a debt. What after all would you be buying? I think that by removing Ashcrofts people Bas thought he was out manoevouring the good Lord and co. How daft?!
What I will say we are all Watford fans, and most of us have seen dire, average, good and great times, tell you what the great times were the best, and that's what I want for my club
Lutondown I did not name you fully and I certainly did not do it to cause any issue and if it did I apologise. My name is Andrew not Dave for the record, likewise I am also confident to answer anyone anywhere and you know some of my back ground in the force as I have not made it secret as I am proud to have served this country even if it is not mutual by others for their own personal reasons. As said I do not think the way Bassini is going about this is correct, but it does not (yet) detract from what has been done in the last 15 months and as he is the current owner he has had the say to achieve most of this progress, when I look at the previous regimes operation none of them apart from EJ day's stand out for the amount of progress made in the past 15 months compared on a like for like season, if I am a minority which I frankly don't think I am, I still stand to be corrected to where the above is not correct, but no one is answering this back to be incorrect with facts or reasons just cheap insults and cr ap especially from that childish idiot bankrupt which further doesn't substantiate any wrong doing by Bassini except the current dramatics.

Sorry Alex but if that is a reason to hate the guy from day one by you and others, it is pretty weak. Yes he is strange in his approach and PR is not great but his past is his past and has nothing to do with his tenure at Watford, just like your past is your past so that is not an example, how many other club owners were bankrupt before, Alan Sugar, Simon Jordan, Ken Bates to name a few but that did not stop them doing great things for their clubs (most of the time)also looking at some of the biggest and richest men in industry also went through bankruptcy before Richard Branson is a prime example so sorry this is no reason to hate the guy, because despite his name changes and desire to be private he stopped the club going into administration full stop and was the only offer on the table for us to continue. Your answer to other eccentric behaviour is correct but it is also what we in the trade will call narrow mindless to the full picture, he was ill so could not attend the forum that my friend is fair reason whether you like it or not you cannot state what his level of pain, discomfort etc was to opt out.Re your list of achievements I think it is all well saying he got some new wire for a tannoy system but that wire et all cost 850k for the complete system, also you do not mention the investment into the team with signings and loanees including some high profile and expensive loanees and also appeasing the fans by putting his money into buying player when possible, supporting the managers needs and helping through that to achieve a great top half table finish when avoiding relegation was the main requirement from the fans, those 'achievements were more than the previous 3 regimes achievements in a like for like so why can't he be recognised for that fact? He is now being forced by the bondholders to sell the club so hopefully this progresses, he is obviously unhappy to do this but either needs to raise over 9.5 million or sell, taking into account bondholders dues and club running costs needed to continue. Re HMRC there is nothing to talk about at present and as you correctly point out in due course we will be wiser to the ins and outs of the money at the next publishing of accounts, but in fairness we have always wondered were our club owners have put the money made from transfers, at least with Bassini he has made visible efforts with it in the pub, pitch, players, equipment in one season. I thank you for actually attempting to answer why he is hates by some but as you see above he has not really merited that response and has done more good than harm!

Alex Hillcroft says...

Corbyn - I believe your assertion that Baz has done more good than harm will prove wildly wide of the mark, but we'll just have to wait and see.

Time for another "official statement" ? Even if its to say they are still continuing today in a positive fashion.
And perhaps one from Bas to say he's never even heard of the Pozzos, will own the club forever, has put in a bid for Ronaldo and his mother is a teapot ?

Yes Young was poor but Milner should never have started. Welbeck should've been given more time. Carroll weren't the answer. Oxlade was worth a punt...anyway, what's the latest on this Watford takeover I keep hearing about. Buckler? Wake up you've got a job to do

With regard to the takeover possibly the stupidity expressed on these threads is only equal to Bas's PR.

He was the chosen one by the Board, who were nominally headed up by GT with Fransen and Timperley. Guided by advisers and the Good Lord.

Can they have got it so wrong or is Bas's latest outburst aimed at pushing the Pozzo's into a higher gear. if it was it appears to have worked and for WFC that has to be good.

If ownership and or control had changed we could perhaps have expected an announcement. No such announcement has been made.

As I have stated many time the quality of WFC admin under J Winter and before that Boy Blunder appears from the cash flow crisis appears abysmal and is matched by the crazy assumptions and assertions of many of the contributors.

There are many things wrong at WFC and it needs a good sort out, the airing of dirty washing leaves a nasty taste and hopefully under new football orientated management we may see a culling of both staff and directors, I trust that Sean who has done a good job will survive but it is time for many of the staff as well as the owner to leave.

As for Ashley Young, the forwards and midfielders suffice it to say they have played better.

Having been in australia for the last 9 years i cant really comment on certain things happening over there, but from where i am it lookd like bas had done alright for the club. But as i said i'm over here so have no idea on what is actually happening, all i do know is that now Deeneys in the clink we need this takeover to go through so we can buy a new striker.

Bassini is apparently blaming Nat West for screwing up his online balance for the mis-understanding. The helpful bank have now given assurances that the Pozzo family do have more than 2 shirt buttons to rub together.
