Watford defender Lloyd Doyley hoping club continues to progress

Lloyd Doyley has praised the impact of Watford’s signings last summer and hopes their developing squad can stay together for years to come.

The Hornets have made no secret of the fact they need to sell players to balance the books but it has led to a dramatic overhaul of the playing squad for the last four summers.

Adrian Mariappa could well depart after the best campaign of his career with only a year left on his current contract, but his good friend Doyley is hoping the squad will remain together on the whole.

Last summer the club signed a host of players as they looked to increase the experience at the club, including the likes of Chris Iwelumo, Jonathan Hogg and Carl Dickinson.

Speaking before he departed for his summer break, Doyley told the Watford Observer: “We have brought in a few players who have strengthened our squad. These players have helped us massively and hopefully they will stay here for three or four years.”

Like Malky Mackay before him, Sean Dyche had to cope with several of his best players leaving last summer and faced a rebuilding job during his first season in management.

Danny Graham, Don Cowie and Will Buckley all departed Vicarage Road last year and left an obvious void, especially in the attacking department.

Doyley said: “I think we have progressed from last season (2010/11).

“At the beginning of this season we lost a few players but to be fair we restructured the squad and I think it is pretty strong now.

“At the beginning of the season we didn’t start too well but we picked up and ended with more points than last year.”

When asked about the major differences between Dyche’s first season and the year before, Doyley replied: “I think we have been pretty similar in terms of consistency in the sense of winning a few games, going on runs and then losing a few.

“But in the second half of the season we picked up and the consistency levels were pretty good and we only lost three or four games in the last 20, which showed the improved consistency we have brought in. Last season we had a few players who scored a lot of goals which got us out of a bit of a mess but this season we have spread it out more.

“We have also added more experienced players who have helped us along the way.”

Doyley has been a mainstay in the Hornets side for the best part of a decade and started the opening 14 games of last season.

But then injury saw him sidelined for two months and when he did return, he had to wait another six weeks before securing his place again.

“I have enjoyed most of the season,” Doyley said. “I had a little period where I was out for a few games with injury and I couldn’t get myself back in the team but that shows how strong the group is.

“There have been periods during the season where players haven’t been able to get back in because other players have been doing well and that is a credit to everyone at the club.

“Everyone is training well and fighting to get into the team.”

Doyley’s primary competitor for the right back slot, Lee Hodson, can consider himself slightly unfortunate to finish the campaign out of the picture after he impressed while filling in for his more experienced team-mate, but ultimately lost his place to left back Carl Dickinson.

Doyley said: “Lee is a really good player.

“When I was injured, he came in and did really well and when I got fit, I couldn’t get back in because himself, and the team, where doing really well.

“There are a few other youngsters who could also be fighting for the right back and left back spots. As well as Carl Dickinson, you have Dale Bennett, who did really well at Brentford.

“There is still a lot to fight for. I need to push them and make sure I am in the team.”

If Doyley has his wish and the majority of the squad do remain together, then hopefully the Hornets can build on what was a successful campaign.

For their right back, he is not getting too carried away when it comes to his hopes for next season; more of the same is his message.

He said: “I haven’t spoken to the boss yet about the progression but that is what it is about; progressing as a club.

“We have to try to get more points than last year, which is always a good sign of progression, and I would say that will be our target next season.”

But whom do we get up front? With a court case and lack of a 20-goal a year person as the song goes "There May Be Trouble Ahead". Let's hope we can get a goal scorer. The defence is fine, even if Mapps goes. Midfield can be overrun if we do not take the pressure off by having guys hat can put the pressure on their defences. New season. Hope for the best and give Loach a rest from negative stuff. He may recover his earlier form. I hope so!!!

A 20 goal striker would be great but most teams in the league don't have a 20 goal man. We need someone that will get us 12-15 goals - Deeney could if he is available!

I'd like to see us get another goalkeeper in, Kuszczak was brilliant but it's unrealistic to think we could afford him but a few others that we could attract.

A solid squad with a good mix of young and experience has been built. All that needs doing is tweeking.

What's going on with the change of ownership?? Emergency board meeting, May's wages delayed and Bassini encouraged to sale so we can continue to survive!
Does the man actually have any money?? No.
He seems to only have put things in place after the sale of key players, think we need to hear from the club and not just what's being reported. Sounds ominous once again.

Baz was 'found out' a long long time ago.

It's always been a matter of when, not if, and now appears to be the when.

Goodbye Baz - WFC will be so much better off (literally) without you

He did state months ago that the plans for the stand had all been finalised and deals were done with private and public sector bodies for medical centre etc. Then he couldn't remember whether it was private or public sector......

Of course the SW corner was due to start in October last year and then in January and then last week.....

He said he would do the pub too. Lets be fair. He has done that and apparently (cough) spent £500k on putting some plasterboard up. Im sure there was a reason for doing this ahead of SW corner and other projects. Mmmmm......now why would that be???? After a year of deafening silence, maybe he will come out at last and tell fans what he and his side kick lawyer Angilino Barrea have been playing at?

Just back from the pub. Anyone else heard that LB is selling out to the owner of Udenese (Italy)? Seems a starnge story given what LB has done thus far, pitch doing up the pub and promises of more to come. Can't wait for the WO to react to this alleged story that is evidently in one of the Sunday papers. Aint seen the story myself but I do not think my mate was winding me up. He is not like that evn if he supports Spurs.

Agree with this post, what was Andrealino Barrea doing? Was he Baz's Chief Exec?

When you think about the Barmy goings on and apparent lunacy ..... hats of to the WFC staff who have done a Sterling job to get our club to where it is on and off the pitch in the last year or however long Baz has been in charge.

Just listened to Kevin Affleck on BBC London. Seems take over is on the cards but could be a protracted affair as Baz is asking for 2-3 quid million to sell to Udinese owner Giampaolo Pozzo. Pozzo has a club in Spain as well as Udinese and has been looking for a London based club to add to his portfolio. He considered Charlton but saw more potential in Watford. With the Baz money and paying off bond holders the final bill will be well over 10 million - that's before any ground works begin!

Hopefully Baz will sell up without much of a fight but I expect it will become a Petchey situation where the seller takes a lot more money than they are entitled to.

Questions for those of us who are always right?
If we have no money and were late paying wages for May why did we turn down £2M offer for Mapps?
As much as I love Watford who in their right mind could see more potential in Watford than Charlton?
GT resigned recently indicating that whereas previously the club had been under threat, now the owner and manager have been in place for a year or so he felt it was time for him to go. Would he have gone if we were back in difficulty?
Answers on a postcard please.

No need for a postcard Cliff.
I think GT was getting very uncomfertable with Bassini so he went as quietly as he could before it hit the fan.
We turned down 2mill for maps because he is worth more, even bassini(who is not a businessman could see that)
I cant see why you think Charlton has got more potential than Watford?
Most of all Cliff unless you are blind you must see your hero Bas has never had money.
Answers please not on a postcard

The pub cant have cost anymore that £50-£100k regardless of the nonsense claims of spending £500k. It would appear to be a fund generator for the owner rather than the club.

As for the pitch. Let's wait and see on this. Payment rarely gets made up front despite the 'claims' that a deposit was made over a year ago. Has he paid a single penny towards it if he has been unable to produce funds to pay players and staff? Sky reporting today that last months salaries were not paid by club??

Whatever change might bring we need to embrace it and embrace it quick.

Once we have some security with what we hope will be wholesome owners, then a full investigation must be carried out on Bassini to see where all the money that has come into the club over the past year has gone if it hasn't gone on the running costs of the club.

He has a qualified lawyer (angilino barrea) as his right hand man. It was widely reported before they bought WFC about all the businesses they had sent bankrupt previously so 'if' the current rumours about their tenure are true then they must both be pursued and brought to account to ensure no other business can suffer again after such a high profile disaster
